As a family that has multiple allergies I am always aware of possible triggers, especially when the seasons change. Spring brings new life, but it also brings the awakening of pollen in the plants, mold in the grass and a bunch of other fun things. As we move into summer, the allergies seem to worsen, but given we spend more time outdoors, it makes sense. It would seem like we have little choice when it comes to living with allergies and other illnesses that can result from exposure.
Or, do we?
Even if you spend most of your time outdoors during the summer, this infographic from Ahdoot Oriental Rugs gives an interesting perspective on just how healthy the inside of our home really is—despite regular cleanings. The statistics are surprising and definitely make a good case for having your rugs cleaned professionally at least once a year. Much like cleaning your mattresses or changing the batteries in your smoke detectors, having clean rugs means a safer, healthier, happier home.

We JUST bought a steam cleaner becuase before that we’ve cleaned the carpets (shampooed) like 1 time in 3 years. So nasty
DARLENE W says
First thing we did when we moved into our home, threw out all the laid carpeting, so many things hiding in the pile
Stephanie LaPlante says
Oh dear. No wonder I don’t sneeze as much since we got hardwood floors. I do however like area rugs so I better be careful.
AD says
That’s a lot of good information. I suffer from dust allergies and we replaced all the carpet in my home (except rugs) to hardwood.

I vacuum my rugs a lot because we have a cat. I have shampooed them too but I should do it more often. All of those nasty things you listed above is kinda freaking me out a bit.

This is great info I have carpet in my livingroom and bedroom, and would like to remove them, I have 3 dogs and a cat, plus a husband that doesn’t like removing his shoes all the time, and it’s a pain cleaning the carpet all the time!!

I have small rugs so I toss them into the wash machine – I’d love to tear out the carpet and replace it all with hardwood but thats a cost that prob wont happen anytime soon

We have no rugs or carpet in our house. When my son was young, I wanted one in the winter, as the floors get cold. He has asthma and allergies though so we got rid of it. So much interesting information in the graphics you shared!

This is a great informative post. I have a couple of small rugs which I vacuum often. I have carpet in my basement in a room which we no longer use and I don’t vacuum that much. It is amazing the amount of dust that gets on the wood floors that you would not notice on carpet. I vacuum daily with a cordless and once a month with more powerful vacuum.
Diversity Smith says
We’ve had dust mites since the dawn of time. Just now, we make life more inviting for them. More ventilation, more rug beating, more vacuuming, and lots of hot water for the bedding. Those are all useful. You can also get special covers for your mattresses. The older they are, the heavier they get with dust mite stuff …

oh boy! well lots of great information here that’s for sure. We definitely do not clean our carpets enough that’s for sure. We need to give them a good cleaning soon. only so much a vaccuum can pick up
Lisa L says
That is quite the infographic! Very shocking and gross indeed. We don’t clean our rugs that often unfortunately but I will be more meticulous about it now.
Kristi says
This is a really good reminder to clean our rugs. I did mine carpets two years ago but haven’t since. I clean my entrance rug at least twice a year.
kathy downey says
That’s a lot of good information. IWe have no carpet just a few small smalls and those are hard enough to keep clean !
