A Guide To Eating Seasonally

May 24, 2018 By: MapleMouseMama17 Comments

eating seasonally

Year-round produce? It’s what we’ve become accustomed to. At any time of the year, most people expect to be able to walk into their grocery store and find any number of fruits and vegetables, from fresh blueberries and strawberries to fresh heads of lettuce and fresh cucumbers.

But as anyone who has spent any time growing food can tell you: that’s not a realistic scenario for harvest. In fact, many of those crops have traveled great distances—sometimes across oceans—and been grown in circumstances that don’t resemble anything like a typical garden setup (think massive greenhouses). There is, however, another alternative for obtaining our produce like this: it’s to learn more about what we eat and to think more about where we’re getting it from.

To start that, it’s helpful to understand the growing season for most typical items that you might want to purchase. This graphic provides a good place to start, as well as information about thinking local about those purchasing decisions.

Seasonal Eats: Which Produce Is in Season When

Whether you are making dinner at home or heading out for a night on the town, consider eating seasonally for your own good and the environment’s.

What are your current in-season favourites?

Eating in season veggies are great, save money and eat the fruits and produce at it’s best state. I think that you can compromise and stock up on them while in season and freeze some too to enjoy on the off months

I appreciate all ur tips. I have Lupus fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis so healthy eating when I can helps tremendously not to mention my hubby is a diabetic. You all make it look so simple but I’ve learned for me the trick is a journal

The only season that matters for most Canadians is summer because that’s when we get the best produce whether we have a personal garden or buy from the farmers market or a grocery store

Eating is so healthy and is much cheaper, especially if you can pick it out of your own garden, which we can. Love my fresh vegetables on my table every night. Hate to see it end.
