Ask anyone I know and they will tell you I am not the crafty, make your own Christmas decorations sort of person. I do love the look of a beautifully adorned pine tree during the holidays or how a staircase can be transformed into a cascading waterfall of sparkling lights and glistening garland; I just can not seem to create those masterpieces myself. However, all is not lost on this gal. Martha Stewart I am not, but I do have a trick or two up my sleeve and I would love to share them with you! Take a look at my Do It Yourself Christmas Decorations!
The following three creations came about whilst I was setting up my Nativity on the top of our old upright piano. The piano is usually covered in photographs, the odd knickknack and several vases. During the holidays I store these items in the empty boxes my Christmas decorations have recently vacated and put them out of sight for a few weeks. I must have acquired a new vase or two this year because, for some reason, they would not all fit in the container reserved for tall things. What to do, what to do? Inspiration struck and not in the form of Pinterest either. I was standing there, among various odd baubles, loose tinsel and strings of beads that were not being used on the tree this year and thought, “why not use them to fill up the vases?!” The end result of this brilliant idea is what you see below. I must say I think they look very pretty across the back of the piano.
For the first one I had a bunch of leftover candy canes that did not fit on the Christmas tree. There is really no better way to display these yummy holiday treats then to hang them on the tree, but I think this is a great alternative for any leftovers. You can pattern them by colour and fill up the top of your vase. I added an old Santa hat in the bowl of the vase for colour and texture. What do you think?
The second one was pretty simple too. I just filled up the vase with some broken strings of beads in red, gold and green ( sounds like a Boy George song..) and those left over baubles. Easy peasy!
The last one ties for my favorite with the candy cane decanter. Still very simple in design, with some garland tucked into the vase. The highlight is the little bird nesting in the middle. Isn’t it sweet? This one calls to mind the beautiful Christmas song called “The Gift”. Check out these heartwarming lyrics..
So there you have it, my Do It Yourself Christmas Decorations! You may never see them in the pages of Canadian Living, but I am pretty happy with them.
Are you a Do It Yourself type of person? What sort of Christmas decorations have you created before?
Merry Christmas!

Those are very festive creations that you made! To answer your question, I’m not very crafty unless I have to be. I’m more creative than artistic, if you know what I mean.
MapleMouseMama says
Thank you Jenna and yes I do know what you mean 🙂 Even now when I am faced with the kids wanting to do crafts I feel faint, LOL

Nice! Someone taught me this for a baby shower I hosted last year. Wish I can do it but I can’t trust my 3 year old with too many breakables around here.
Good job, though!

These are simple and very easy DIY decorations for Christmas. It’s very helpful especially for those who do not want to spend extra to buy new ones. Also, this gives us ideas how to recycle old (and some broken) Christmas decors. 🙂
