Somewhere Over The #RainbowLoom…..

January 9, 2014 By: MapleMouseMama48 Comments

Rainbow Loom MapleMouseMamaChances are if you have a daughter between the ages of five and fifteen you know what Rainbow Loom is. This latest craze in kid crafting was one of the hottest toys to ask for this Christmas and yes, my daughter Emily was on that bandwagon to.Β  Rainbow Loom is her new obsession and I have the pictures to prove it!

For those of you not in the loop, Rainbow Loom is a plastic contraption kids are using to make bracelets, necklaces, keychains and even rings out of tiny, little elastics of various colours.Β  Think about the elastics your dentist uses for braces and you’ll know the ones I mean.Β  My daughter received a storage case full of elastics in every colour of the rainbow πŸ™‚ for Christmas and hasn’t stopped creating ever since!Β

A plethora of elastics!

A plethora of elastics!

Despite the chances of a multitude of colourful little rubber circles covering your furniture, the Rainbow Loom is a great project for kids.Β  It is relatively inexpensive and the variety of creations are endless. The kit cost less then twenty dollars and came with the loom, a hook and hundreds of elastics.Β  Every pack of elastics also comes with dozens of clips to keep the jewelry together when you are done. I purchased the Rainbow Loom from Michaels, but you can buy the elastics from most dollar stores.

An Emily original!

Emily has made a variety of accessories so far and she searches for new patterns on YouTube!Β  The loom itself comes apart to create different designs and for easy storage.Β  You need only choose your pattern and get to work!Β  Recently Emily received a loot bag at her friend’s birthday party and inside was a package of elastics and a pair of chopsticks! Perfect for making Rainbow Loom creations on the go!

Bracelets, rings and more!

Bracelets, rings and more!

To date Emily has produced about twenty-five Rainbow Loom items and she is not slowing down.Β  Has your child found the pot of elastics at the end of the rainbow yet?

My daughter asked for (and received) a Rainbow Loom for Christmas this year. I thought it was a great value for under $20. She has really enjoyed making bracelets and colour coordinating them.

Both kiddos have them. And -amazingly- take good care of them and I have yet to find a stray elastic. Shocking!! We were at a girls hockey tournament and one of the teams made bracelets together to sell during the tournament. They raised over $600 for a local hockey player that was gravely injured. The hotel staff were amazed “You wouldn’t even have known there was a hockey team here. They were so quiet!”. πŸ™‚

You are lucky you are not finding them all over Shannon. They are a pain to clean up, but luckily my daughter is motivated, LOL. That is great yours have used them for fundraising! My daughter is doing the same thing and is making her stockpile now. She has made other bracelets for fundraising in the past so this fits perfectly :-0 We have great kids!

This all sounds like fun, which all little girls should enjoy…..but……I am from the old school and I can’t wait for Emily to start knitting her own sweaters and sewing her own clothes!! Hummmmm that was for another generation you say? Maybe so, but who knows, it all might come back again! Meanwhile, enjoy the kit! πŸ™‚

I’m a teacher, so I know these are all the rage! The girls in my class each made me one for the last week of school- they make hideous bracelets! And because they were gifts, I had to wear them all week. Scratchy, and super tacky, but great for building coordination and the kids love them. I guess wearing them and looking like a teenager for a week was worth the tradeoff.

Can you believe that just recently I have found out about these rainbow looms? πŸ™‚ My colleague at work was wearing them and they were so coloful and cute, I had to ask where did she buy them. I found out that her daughter, age 6 was making them. Now I have a few myself. πŸ™‚
I love the ones created by your sweet Emily.
