Disney Presents: The Finest Hours

February 1, 2016 By: MapleMouseMama8 Comments

the finest hours

I love a good action type movie. You know, the kind that has you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath for the next explosion, hurricane or tidal wave to hit. If you can add in moments where I have to half cover my eyes, then it is a winner in my book.  Disney’s The Finest Hours delivers this and so much more. But hey, it’s Disney so I didn’t expect anything less.

A heroic action-thriller, The Finest Hours is the remarkable true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D, will take audiences into the heart of the true story by creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale of the events that occurred so many decade ago but never forgotten.

Any movie that is defined as an action-thriller and is based on a true story is bound to tug at your heartstrings.  The Finest Hours starts us off with a peek at a soon to be blooming romance between Coast Guardsman Bernie Webber and his ladylove, Miriam.  It soon moves on to February 18, 1952, when a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path. Smack dab in that path is the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern.

As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire them to work together to survive one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. I found Casey’s character to be the unsung hero in this movie.

Meanwhile, as word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds. This is the part that has you on the edge of your seat!

The finest hours

Disney’s The Finest Hours brings to the screen a front row look at ordinary people digging deep from within to do extraordinary things, all in the name of doing their job. Based on a true story of courage and valor it is a roller coaster ride of human endurance that reminds you once again, that nothing is impossible given the right combination of grit, guts and determination. When you remember that these events took place in 1952 before any of today’s advances in technology we really are reminded of the power of the human spirit to overcome anything.

Have you or will you go and see Disney’s The Finest Hours?

Looks amazing! I love action films. But I don’t often go to the theatre. I might have to wait until it comes out on video.

I keep telling my husband I want to see this and he says he’s saving me from crying lol. I wondered if it would be gut wrenching like Titanic. I didn’t know it was a true story nor did i know Disney made it. They sure are talented over there.
