I have always loved live theatre, be it a musical or play, or somewhere in between. I am lucky that my spouse enjoys this form of entertainment as well and together we have seen dozens of shows. A few years ago I introduced my young daughter to the theatre and she was smitten right away. When my little guy came along I knew it was just a matter of time before we took him to his first show as well. We were lucky to have that opportunity last summer when the whole family took in The Shaw Festival’s production of Peter and the Starcatcher in Niagara-on-the-Lake! What a wonderful experience that was. I would see it again in a heartbeat. ♥
I am so excited to be taking in another wonderful Shaw Festival production this spring and the whole family is going as well. 🙂 Running from April 16th to mid October, the Shaw proudly presents Alice in Wonderland! Featuring 19 original songs, this family friendly show is sure to delight theatre goers all summer long. The Shaw is known for showcasing the brightest and the best when it comes to talent and if Alice is anything like Peter, I know we are going to be left wanting more.
The added bonus for anyone attending a Shaw Festival production is the location. With a choice of four beautiful theatres to visit, the Shaw has something for everyone, from musicals that will have you wanting to sing along to beautiful romance, side splitting comedy and heartfelt human tragedy. All of this set in the picturesque countryside that is Niagara-on-the-Lake. Quaint little inns, charming cafes and just enough shopping to keep you busy, you can definitely make a great vacation out of your visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake and take in a one or more of the Shaw’s amazing productions.
About Alice
The process of adapting this childhood favourite book into a play at the Shaw Festival began five years ago when artistic director Jackie Maxwell and director Peter Hinton began a conversation about a play at The Shaw that would be inclusive of children and at the same time be something that adults would equally enjoy. As Alice in Wonderland is the second most published book in all languages after the Bible, this story clearly fit the bill!
In this fascinating story where a girl grows and shrinks from 28 feet to 8 or 9 inches, cries a pool of tears that both she and animals must swim in and a huge game of croquet is played with flamingo mallets and hedgehog balls, you will meet the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle and more. Staying true to it’s Victorian roots the story is told from the point of view of Alice, a smart, strong-minded girl who falls down a rabbit hole only to face the nonsense of the grown-up and amazing world of Wonderland.
