I don’t know about all of you, but I walked into the theatre to watch Tomorrowland not knowing anything about it. Sure, I saw the movie trailers. A teenage girl appears to be rebellious, finds a pin with a ’T’ on it and when she touches it, a big beautiful city appears and there is voice-over from George Clooney. But that’s all I knew. After now seeing the movie, I think it was an executive decision to make sure the viewer knew virtually nothing about the film in an effort to make it just as mysterious and foreign as the world of Tomorrowland.
Tomorrowland is the future. There are robots, huge buildings and the ability to board rocket ships if your heart desires. You’ll meet Casey Newton, who’s not at all rebellious, as she appears in the trailer, she’s an activist who’s working to make change. She’s tired of turning on the news and seeing wars, pollution and devastation. In the present day, she’s made it her mission to emote change and if that means breaking a few rules, well then so be it. Her activist ways introduce her to defeated scientist Frank Walker (George Clooney). Frank has also seen the world of Tomorrowland, but unlike Casey, he’s seen the devastating side of it. Years prior, when he was a child, he discovered some hidden truths about the town that banned him from the world forever. Now Casey and her optimism have convinced him that they must go back together.
When they finally make their way into the world again, it’s not as beautiful as Casey remembers. Buildings are demolished and the population is dismal. Casey and Frank, though an unlikely pair, decide to pair their strengths together to help fix the world of Tomorrowland, ultimately resulting in them having to be responsible for the fate of all mankind.
This was a very ambitious film. There were really fun parts, like seeing that the entrance into Tomorrowland happens when you’re on the ‘It’s a Small World’ ride at Disney World. But, I found it’s plot to be very complicated. Sure there were great scenes, like the Eiffel Tower splitting in two for a rocket ship to fly out of it that will hook children’s attention, but much of the movie, I found myself being confused and whispering to my friend, “what just happened?”. It wasn’t my favourite film of the year, but if you and your children enjoy science fiction mystery adventures, you might want to give this one a try.

We are so excited to see this film. I have also heard it can be a little complicated; it would be way too advanced for my son but I am certain my daughter will enjoy it. And mama will get a little eye candy with George Clooney!
Definitely a very ambitious but ultimately muddled film, which is a shame coming from Brad Bird, who tends to make outright masterpieces.
As a movie with its themes and subtext about our society and filmmaking, it’s a great essay on the state of sci-fi and the hope of where it can go, but as a piece of engaging sci-fi itself, it falters.
I have heard that this one underwhelmed a lot of viewers, which is a shame.. Specially with ole George in it, LOL
I had low expectations going into the theatre, so I ended up enjoying it for what it was. Plotwise, it was just okay, but the visuals were pretty nice.
I find that the best parts of the movie are given away in the previews so it can be a letdown at the theatre. Great that you liked the visuals though :-0
I am so glad that I decided to wait until this movie comes out on video.
LOL Chantal, me too
Im glad i never spent good money to go see this one !
