I have always loved to read. For as long as I can remember I have never been without a book, paged turned down to mark my place. One of my favourite memories I like to share with my tween daughter is how every Saturday, after chores were done and allowances handed out, my sister and I would ride the bus to the mall. My first stop was always Coles book store. I could spend hours in there, looking at the books I wanted to read, making note of what was coming out soon. It was heaven. Sigh…♥ Back at home my room had four massive wall to wall shelves my dad put up to hold my many treasured tomes.
It makes me really happy to share that both of my kiddos love reading and have in fact enjoyed it since they were very young. My daughter has inherited my obsession with collections and has some shelves that would have rivaled mine from my childhood bedroom. Emily recently brought something to my attention that I immediately thought was a wonderful idea; a monthly subscription for books! You can imagine her joy when I told her that she would soon be receiving her very own OwlCrate; a special monthly book subscription box for lovers of Young Adult literature!
I have noticed that, in the past few years the idea of receiving a package each month, containing surprise items that typically follow a theme, has grown. We have even featured one or two before. My daughter was attracted to OwlCrate because it is specifically designed for readers. Every month your subscription box will be delivered with a newly released Young Adult novel and other bookish treats. There is no need to hop the local bus and spend all day in a book store. OwlCrate comes right to your doorstep. And, they are Canadian!!
I love what the clever creators of OwlCrate, Korrina and Robert have to say about their brainchild.
“OwlCrate was created to share the joy of reading with the world. We believe in the importance of literature, and the magic of the written word. Stories help to expand our minds, expose us to new experiences, and show us that we’re not alone. But we also know that reading can often feel like a solitary activity, and we wanted a way to bring book nerds together. By sharing the fun of unboxing your OwlCrates, as well as reading each month’s chosen novel along with other members, we hope you find a safe and happy place among our community.”
Bringing book nerds together really sums it up. 🙂 When you receive your very first OwlCrate it is like Christmas morning to a five year old. Although the theme of the box is revealed on social media before you actually get it, the contents are not. This anticipation builds waiting to see not only what new title you will get, but also what fun items will accompany it. These “bookish treats” can range from from jewelry, totes, pins, yummy snacks and more! Opening up your OwlCrate each month is like unwrapping a special gift, just for you.
To give you an idea of what you may receive, have a look at what came in our OwlCrate for the month of March. The theme was Writer’s Block (just that alone made me excited!):
- New title, The Serpent King by Jeff Zenter
- Custom pack of pins from Bookworm Boutique
- Banned Books Socks from Out of Print
- 642 Tiny Things to Write About notebook from Chronicle Books
- Quill Pen from Kikkerland (the Harry Potter fans in this house went nuts for this!)
Each OwlCrate contains a beautifully illustrated postcard that lists the contents and includes fun tips and facts. I love that by subscribing to OwlCrate you are not only supporting a Canadian business and it’s ingenious entrepreneurs, but also other small businesses. The bookish treats that are a part of each OwlCrate come from different sources each month that range from one person shops to larger brands, but they all have one thing in common; a desire to share their nerdy side. 🙂 All kidding aside, each OwlCrate is filled with wonderful items to make you appreciate a good read and some quiet time to enjoy it.
Great news! Until the end of May, 2016 MapleMouseMama readers can enjoy a 10% discount when you place your OwlCrate order for yourself or as a gift! Just use the coupon code MMM10 when you subscribe. They have three plans to choose from: Month to Month, 3 Months and 6 Months. We are already eagerly awaiting our third OwlCrate to arrive. While you wait for your order to be delivered visit the OwlCrate Instagram page to see what everyone else is saying about this charming company.

This is such a great subscription box idea! I love the idea that many young readers are reading the same book at the same time- and they can “talk” to each other about it over social media! I would have loved this as a kid. I’m hoping my toddler daughter loves to read as much as I do, too. 🙂

I love to read all types of books. I don’t really have a favorite type. If I can get captured by the book within the first chapter I usually don’t want to stop! OwlCrate is a great idea to get my students excited to read in the classroom.
