Could you use some good Christmas storage ideas? It drives me a bit nuts when, year after year, I take out the garland to hang and it is all bunched up, just waiting for a tangle to render it useless. Or even worse, when a favourite ornament breaks, even though it is wrapped in tissue paper and laid carefully in a nest of bubble wrap. Improperly storing your decorations will cost you, both financially and emotionally. Help is on the way! These Christmas storage ideas will help you protect those precious decorations and give you peace of mind.Â
Here are a handful of creative ways to store your holiday decor so that next year you don’t have a jumbled mess to deal with when it is time to dress the tree. 🙂
Christmas LightsÂ
One of the biggest struggles is having to untangle Christmas lights every year. Here are a few ways to store your lights. Instead of buying an expensive light holder, grab a hanger. Start by wrapping your string of lights around the hanger and use it as the base. Then secure the end and tuck it into a storage container. The other way you can do this is by using cardboard – slice off a piece of cardboard and cut a slit, slide one end of the lights in so it is held in place, then wrap your lights around the cardboard. Easy, affordable and minimal space is used.Â
Wrapping PaperÂ
Use a garment bag that you would tuck a suit or fancy dress in to store wrapping paper. Then hang it right in your closet. This method takes up little to no room. You can also wrap a rubber band around the wrapping paper – so there is no risk of it unrolling. For years we stored our wrapping paper upright, using an old, but clean garbage bin. It does work well, but we ended up tossing other things in there and they would sometimes rip the paper. The garment bag is a much better Christmas storage idea and it keeps the gift wrap supplies uncluttered.Â
Christmas OrnamentsÂ
If you don’t want to buy the containers to store your Christmas ornaments in, save some egg cartons. They are easy to use for the small decorations and have their own lid! For large Christmas ornaments try using the drink trays that you might get at your local coffee shop or fast-food restaurant. Just save them throughout the year. As you go through the drive-thru, ask for a carrier! I have lost a number of ornaments that were meaningful to me. Proper, protective storage is the way to go for your ornaments.
Power CordsÂ
Wrap up power cords and stick them inside paper towel rolls. Then add on a gift tag or label to keep them better organized. I label them for items like Christmas trees, outdoor cords, etc. This is perhaps one of my favourite Christmas storage ideas. It takes the guesswork out of which cord goes where and it is easy to tell which ones you might be missing or need to replace.Â
Holiday WreathÂ
If you have space, put your wreath in a trash bag and hang it in your closet. This is a creative way to keep from collecting dust on your wreath and maintaining it in pristine condition. Since we do not have enough room to put ours in the closet, we hang it in our garage, on the wall!Â
Sealable BagsÂ
Resealable storage bags are great for so many things. You can use them for items like labels, gift tags, Christmas bows, stockings and even plastic ornaments. Label each of them to ensure you know what is inside and then tuck them in your storage container.Â
Beaded GarlandÂ
Save a water bottle or soda plastic bottle and put the garland right in the water bottle, slowly. Put the cap back on and you have just saved yourself from a jumbled mess next year. 🙂
Plastic Storage ContainersÂ
If you have a storage container that has seen better days and you’re considering tossing it, don’t! Save it to use for your Christmas decorations. Maybe you put your tree topper in it or your decorations that are easily breakable. You can use different sized containers for a variety of things. I have a rectangle shaped container that would once hold fresh baked cookies, that now gets used for my snowflake ornaments. These are large, flat and have a sparkly “coating” on top. The sparkles stay in the container and the lid keeps the ornaments safe.
Holiday CandlesÂ
Candles are something you might save back at the end of the year. Use old hosiery to slip your candles in so they don’t get scratched. Just cut off how much hose you need and then slide it over the candle. Then store in a box, container, etc. Even coffee cup sleeves work great for added protection. I have purchased several from this wonderful small shop, LilysSecretBoutique, on Etsy and they are pretty and soft. Perfect for protecting your candles.Â
When you store your items, I also recommend using clear containers – this allows you to see what is inside each one. You can find some cheap ones online or even at your local dollar store. Also, clearly labelling each container will help you to quickly take a look and find what you are searching for.Â
I hope these Christmas storage ideas can help you get your Christmas decor put away with ease, so that next year you have a system lined up for easy decorating!

I save bubble wrap and packaging paper throughout the year to wrap up my ornaments and breakable Christmas Items. Using the right sized container for the job is important too. If there’s too much space, things can move around and get broken.

Thanks for sharing all those wonderful ideas. Some I have used others I will have to try this year. I have always tried to save the containers that they came in, whenever possible, but now I have a new way, thanks again!
