I have never been a fan of long hair and have only worn mine long a few times in my life, but I know that many people feel naked without it. It is their pride, a part of them and that is totally understandable. Even my ten year old daughter, who has long hair, has lamented ever cutting it. But in the past year she has been witness to a very selfless act by both her best friend, as well as another classmate. They both cut their hair for charity. It is a pretty sweet thing to see a child give up something they cherish, whatever it is.
Today I learned of another selfless act, by fellow blogger Deanna at Maple Leaf Mommy. Deanna has super long hair and has had it that way for most of her life. I am sure it is a part of her identity that will be hard to part with, but that is exactly Deanna’s intention. Deanna will cut off one inch of her beautiful chestnut hair for every $100.00 she raises. This money will go directly to the Canadian Cancer Society with Deanna’s hair being donated to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program which take the hair and turn it into wigs for cancer survivors. Deanna is doing this to honor her grandmother and you can check out Maple Leaf Mommy to read all about it.
Would you cut your hair for charity?

Thanks so much for your support Suzanne! I just want to make one small correction, while my hair will be donated to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program the cash donations are going directly to the Canadian Cancer Society.
You are most welcome Deanna and I have made the correction..

Thank you Deanna!
Cutting your long hair is, for me, such a big psychological change in how a girl sees herself, that it should not be taken lightly, even for a donation to charity. I say this because I would hope that a young girl would not be ‘talked into’ doing it because others did it. Having said that, my story is this. I had my long hair cut at 11 years of age and my mother saved those 24″ long braids! They were still in her cedar chest when she died. So, I took them, and phoned an organization that makes wigs for children living with cancer and to my surprise they wanted them and could use them! Those braids were 60 years old! So, if hair is kept protected from extreme elements, the likelihood is that it can be used no matter how old it is! Good Luck to Deanna and her fund raising efforts.
I agree with not taking it lightly Gemma, it is definitely a hard decision that needs to be given some thought. I still think the story of your 60 year old hair is a hoot though! Love it and how great that it could be put to great use..

That is such an amazing story Gemma. I would never have guessed that you could donate 60 year old hair!
Ya it is pretty neat that they would accept it after all this time. I am sure there are tons of braids out there hidden in chests that could be donated from years ago, LOL
