Designing an inspiring child’s room is a challenge. Unlike adults’ bedrooms, used mostly for sleep, a kid’s room is the place where our little ones should learn, play and be creative. However, decorating their room to meet their needs can require skills that not every parent possesses. Therefore, having a guide to designing an inspiring child’s room on hand may be quite helpful. It will assist you in learning how to decorate your children’s rooms to stimulate their growth. You can even involve them in the process and facilitate teamwork. It will make your children feel important and they will love being a part of the decision-making process. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the tips you can use to design an inspiring kid’s room.
Design a Morphing Room
We all know how quickly children grow and that keeping up with them can be difficult. Their wants and needs change regularly and their room décor is no exception. Sure, making your children’s room age-appropriate sounds lovely, but it may be expensive. Therefore, if you want to design an inspiring kid’s room, you should have flexibility in mind. Instead of filling the room with things they might like only for the moment, keep the décor simple. It offers them more space for play and you will have enough room for when the time for upgrading comes. Also, choose furniture that they can use for longer and you can repurpose later. It may be a good way of teaching kids about the importance of recycling.
Make Use of the Furniture
Children can find inspiration in everything that is surrounding them. That is why having the right furniture in their room is important. It is the environment in which they will spend the majority of their time. As a result, a plane bed frame or a bed canopy can inspire your little pilot and princess and boost their creativity. Not to mention how it can have a good influence on the quality of their sleep and dreams. For older children, bunk beds could be a fantastic alternative. Some have fun frame designs as well as multiple functions (and secret storage spaces 😉). For example, they can have climbing ropes or ladders to get into bed or even an incorporated swing. It is an excellent addition for children who love adventure and physical activity. Also, if you have enough space in the room, include shelving for their favourite children’s books and a desk for arts and crafts. It will keep their minds and their little hands busy for hours.
Play With Colours and Textures
During development, children pass through multiple stages in which they learn how to interact with their surroundings. Some of the factors that help them in this journey of discovery are their senses. Sight and touch, to be more precise. Therefore, how you design your child’s room could inspire them and encourage them to explore the world around them. For instance, play with the colours of the walls and furniture and don’t be afraid to mix them. At the same time, try not to focus just on your kids’ favourite colours. They may love them now, but you can’t be sure they will still like them in the future. Try using wallpaper to boost the look of the room. On the floors, you can place rugs with themes like animals, race tracks, letters or numbers. To make it fun, you can look for the ones that have mixed textures.
Make the Room Magical
When you are designing an inspiring child’s room, don’t forget about the magic. Especially because living in a big, busy city like New York or Toronto, for example, can often make us forget about the small joys in life. No, we’re not talking about fairytale magic here, but rather the kind that parents create for their children. For example, they can paint the night sky with the stars on the ceiling of their children’s room. If they are raising them in a large city like NYC or even in suburbia, the bright lights pollute the night sky, so it’s almost impossible to see the stars. Fairy lights can also be a nice touch to a kid’s room, as well as putting up a tent. And, to make things even more interesting, how about letting your kids draw on walls? Paint one of the walls in chalk paint and let them decorate the wall as they please. They won’t believe they’re allowed to draw on the walls, so they might imagine that some magic was involved. 🙂
Space to Play
As we already mentioned, don’t overcrowd the room with items that they will only enjoy for a few seconds. Or with pieces of furniture that you find cute, but are massive and useless. (I am guilty of this.) Instead, focus on giving your kids what they want and need the most: enough space to play. It can be difficult if you have to work in a small room, but it’s not impossible. Use your imagination and all the difficult-to-use space to create fun play areas. Of course, it’s a good idea as long as they are in areas where kids can reach. A hammock in a corner, a rock-climbing trail on a wall or a ball pit under the bunk bed are just some ideas. Also, you can set up a special place in the room where you can all have fun playing interactive and creative games during family game nights. The kids will be looking forward to it every time.
Now it is time for me to put my money where my mouth, err, ah, fingers are. 🙂 My 12 year old’s room is in need of a make-over and the cooler weather is a great time to do it. I know that I need to pay attention to my kiddo’s needs. That is the best advice any guide for designing an inspiring child’s room should offer. We need to address his furniture by thinking ahead. Fast growers need bigger-sized furniture, but we can still make it fun and interesting. It’s important to include favourite colours in the room décor and add a touch of magic. And finally, make sure there is space to play. A well-designed room will not only inspire your child and mine, it will spur their imagination, creativity and learning.
What was your favourite thing about the bedroom you had when you were growing up? I had this wooden orange crate that, when turned on it’s end was about two feet tall. We painted it, added two shelves inside and smoothed the wood. It was the best nightstand/personal keeper of all things any child could ask for. 🙂
