My teenage daughter has fallen in love with makeup and she adores the matching brush sets. I don’t personally see the attraction, but I figure it is a harmless hobby to have and since she has to foot the bill, she will soon come to realize that the stuff in those fancy packages is not cheap. Until then, no harm no foul, right? Besides, making yourself look pretty is not a bad thing and we have discussed, many times, that she does not need makeup to be beautiful because she already is. ♥
One thing that happens when you use makeup brushes is that they get dirty. I have used makeup from time to time so I know this tidbit of information, but I have never cleaned them before. This is most likely because of my limited makeup use and the cheap disposable sponges I have purchased. 🙂 So, what does one do with dirty brushes? Clean them, of course! Emily was keen to make her own cleaner so she allowed me to watch and take some photos. #ChildOfABlogger 😉
Here are the steps to follow if you use makeup brushes and want to make your own cleaner. We are not normally DIYers (do it yourself-ers) but this particular item was super easy to make and use. Give it a try!
Items You Will Need:
- an old binder with a plastic cover
- glue gun and glue sticks
- paper towel
- dirty makeup brushes
- liquid hand soap
Directions:
Step 1: Use an old binder that has the sort of plastic covering on it. You will need one side (front or back) to be in decent condition. Remove any papers from inside. Clean off the side you plan to use by wiping with a damp cloth. If there are marks that can come off, like old pen or marker, try to scrub them off.
Step 2: Once the binder cover is dry, plug in your glue gun and slip a glue stick inside. Lay the binder cover flat and starting at the top of the cover, make a line of glue about a half centimeter down.
Step 3: Continue to make lines of hot glue going from one side of the binder cover to the other (left to right) while keeping the cover flat. This will ensure the glue lines do not run. Alternate the shape of your lines making one straight then one squiggly, then jagged and so on. The key is to keep them running in the same direction. Leave approximately half an inch between each line until you hit the bottom of the cover.
Step 4: Let the hot glue dry for about twenty minutes or so. Your DIY Makeup Brush Cleaner is now done!
Step 5: To use the cleaner put drops of the liquid soap on several of the hardened lines of glue while the binder cover is flat. Dip your makeup brush into a small bowl or glass of warm water. Next, place your wet brush into a drop of soap and start making swirling motions. As the soap lathers, rub the bristles of the brush over your lines of hard glue. This allows the dirt to rub off! Rub gently so the bristles do not come out of the brush.
Step 6: Once you have cleaned off the brush, rinse under warm water and continue to the next brush. Lay your brushes flat to dry on a clean towel. Once you have cleaned all of your brushes, wipe off the excess soap from your cover with a paper towel. You can then use a wet paper towel to wipe down your cover, removing any dirt and bristles that came loose. Once dry, store your cover upright for the next time.

I don’t use make-up myself but I do find this a nifty way to clean the brushes. I’ll pass this on to my daughter since my 6 yr old granddaughter is in dance and regularly needs a ton of make-up on her little face.

I’ve never seen this trick before but I usually buy my brush cleaner and it has an alcohol base and I just spray the brushes and then wipe them off on a paper towel but maybe I should try spraying and then going on to the binder page

I take a drop of kitchen soap and gently swirl the brushes in the palm of my hand. I rinse in warm water until the water is clear. Turn the bristle end up and place in a small jar and wait for the brush to dry out.

This Makeup brush cleaner is so easy to make if you have a glue gun. Thank you for sharing. I like to make certain things. I can sew so I save money by making my own and my family’s alterations. I also knit so I am in great demand for mittens, etc., for small hands. I like to make my own flower bed displays.

When I need to clean a paint brush I just add a couple of drops of washing up liquid to warm water and gently massage the bristles with my fingers to get the paint off (I mean poster paint!) wouldn’t that work too?

Wow, I love this idea. I hate to clean my makeup brushes. This makes it simple and quick to do. I will also pass to my Daughter and friends. Thanks so much. I make a lot of crafts and use things around the house to organize with. One example is an empty soda can box. I cut out the top of one end. I cover mine with paper but you don’t have to. Then I put on a shelf and put can goods in them. I separate the different types of cans in each one, like beans, sauce etc.
