top gun movie

Oh, the eighties. Those were some good times, man. I am an eighties child, of that I am sure. The hair, the clothing (neon – yes, shoulder pads – not so much), the music and the movies. Many a classic were released during the eighties that still have the power to suck us in for an all day movie fest on the couch. Movies like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (come on, say it with me, “Bueller, Bueller” 🙂 ) and Top Gun. Each of these movies was adored for it’s own unique and entertaining story line, but some, like Top Gun, were elevated to cult status.

“The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman (Val Kilmer). But Maverick isn’t only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he’s also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).”

Top Gun is the movie that launched Tom Cruise’s career into fame as sure as an ejection seat launches a pilot into the sky. Since it’s release in 1986, Top Gun has inspired the names of many kittens, puppies and children (or anything else that typically comes in multiples.) My best friend and her hubby named each of their cats after Maverick, Goose, Charlie and so on. It’s how Top Gun die-hards pay tribute to this fast paced, adrenaline-pumping, heart-pounding, infinitely re-watchable film.

In mix with prevalent race bias, discrimination based upon income made it progressively hard for working-class blacks to
discover houses in the residential areas after World War II.
