Residing in Southern Ontario has many benefits, not the least of which is our proximity to the Niagara area; specifically Niagara-on-the-Lake. We visit often during the year and stay for the shopping, the sights, the food and especially for the entertainment. In the past couple of years we have been able to take in several productions put on by the renowned Shaw Festival and fortunately they always offer at least one show that is family-friendly. That is how we discovered our youngest had inherited the family’s love for live theatre!
This year the Shaw’s family show is called The Magician’s Nephew. In Victorian London, young Digory and his new friend Polly stumble onto a magical portal into another world — but accidentally unleash a dark force that could destroy them all. Packed with stellar performances and spine-tingling music, The Magician’s Nephew is bringing audiences to their feet. Perfect for both Narnia lovers and first-time discoverers of this treasured literary series.
My family and I have plans to see The Magician’s Nephew this summer and we can’t wait! The plot is geared towards children so it is easy to follow, even if you have not read the Chronicles of Narnia yet. As with live theatre, the sets are minimal, but incredibly fun to watch as they are transformed throughout the show. From what I understand the beautiful masks and music bring everything to life! And best of all, the audience gets to participate. The Magician’s Nephew promises to entertain you and your whole family with sweet moments and laugh out loud dialogue. The show is recommended for children ages 6 and up and runs for just over two hours.

I used to go to theaters often, but not in the last several years – the price is the biggest factor in that. My favorite show of all times was Mariinsky’s Theatre Romeo and Juliet. – it was amazing (and as a student I paid less that a dollar).

I go to Stratford, plays in Toronto, and I have been to the Shaw Festival numerous times. I think my favourite was Beauty & the Beast at the Princess of Wales theatre in Toronto but I have seen many splendid Stratford and Shaw productions (I just love the music from the Beauty and the Beast so much).
