It isn’t just an old wives tale that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I have had those days where I am running late and just don’t have time to make, let alone eat a healthy breakfast so I don’t. I usually get so busy with work that it doesn’t bother me that I have not eaten – that is until the crash. The crash usually happens around 10:30am on days when I have been up since 5:45am. If I have not had any breakie the crash starts off with a vague gnawing feeling in my stomach, which I can usually quell by drinking water. But that doesn’t last for long. Next the gnawing builds to a full blown growl and around that time the tingle of a headache starts in my forehead. Yup, the crash is not pretty.
Not too long ago I was challenged to change up my breakfast routine and try something new. Try a cereal that I might otherwise have ignored on the grocery store shelf. To shake up the morning meal and get #MyBixMix on. So, I did. Enter Weetabix, a cereal that has been around for more than 100 years! After an eventful history Weetabix made it’s Canadian debut in Cobourg, Ontario in 1975 and has been manufactured there ever since.
Trying a new cereal is not all that challenging, but sticking with it for more than a few bowls is. Weetabix does not have a funny cartoon character on it’s box. It doesn’t have any colourful candy or mini marshmallows to make your milk change colour. It also doesn’t have a ton of unnecessary sugar to fill you up and it doesn’t have a lot of calories per serving. In fact each two biscuit serving of Weetabix has a mere 130 calories and only two grams of sugar. That’s pretty remarkable for a cereal that isn’t all flashy and full of junk meant to fill you up.
#MyBixMix challenge started off with testing the waters by just adding milk to the bowl. I loved the crunch the high quality grains made and the taste was delicious. I ended up only eating one and a half biscuits the first morning because I getting full – a morning feeling I was not used to. The full feeling came from all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that each Weetabix biscuit is full of and guess what? That full feeling lasted all morning long! The 10:30am crash didn’t happen and I realized something. I realized that the crash always left me feeling tired for the rest of the day, which bled into the evening causing me to drag my butt and just want to flake on the couch after dinner. Eating, or not eating breakfast can literally make or break your whole day!
The rest of #MyBixMix challenge continued with great success! I am not the most creative in the kitchen, but I did manage to change it up every other day. This is what I came up with.

I think my favourite was breaking up the biscuits into bite sized pieces and eating it with Greek blueberry yogurt. Great combination and the energy and good feelings I was left with were wonderful! Plus, I could snack on it (which I did at work) and the biscuits did not get soggy. Make sure you check out the Weetbix website for more great ideas and coupons and follow the hashtag #MyBixMix on Twitter for inspiration.
Tell me, how would you mix your bix?

I haven’t tried “The Bix” but was wondering if they are anything like shreddred wheat? Maybe I’ll give them a try, and like you add fruit and yogurt. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, very much like Shredded wheat, but a bit different to. I really liked them with the yogurt and fruit though. It’s a nice change.
For a little while I loved adding a couple small scoops of vanilla ice cream and berries!

Thanks Kristen! They are great for a filling snack or breakkie
I have never heard of Weetabix but looks like it could have tons of uses.
I grew up with Weetabix on the breakfast table – my mother and twin sister loved them, strangely enough I never liked it. My taste has changed over the years and I’m not as fussy as I once was about my food so perhaps I should give it a go now
I love this cereal! I’m so happy that my boys love it too!
I add a teaspoon or 2 of chia seeds.
What a great idea Jared, thank you!
