Not to be gross or anything, but did you know that, on average, a human sheds about 28 grams of skin cells every month?! That is about the size of a bag of chips! Okay now I’m grossing myself out! It’s a fact of life, our skin has to regenerate so the old stuff needs to go somewhere, right? Want to guess where most of it ends up? Yup, you got it. It’s in your mattress. You know the place where you lay down and stretch out every night. 🙂
Now something else is lurking in our mattresses and it ain’t pretty. Dust mites, up to 2 million of the little buggers, feed on all those dead skin cells, gobbling them up like candy. This in turn produces dust mite waste, or feces. You know, poop. Now before you start freaking out and throwing out your mattress, you need to know that you can’t see the average dust mite poop because it is less than 0.3 microns in size. That’s tiny. Teeny tiny, even. But, they are still dangerous. As we roll around in our beds during sleepy-bye time, these dust mite feces start to float around and then we inhale them. You will have no idea you are breathing them in, but you are. This can lead to a triggering of allergy symptoms, like an itching, runny nose, asthma and a flair up of eczema.
But, there is hope! Dyson, known for their amazing vacuums, has created the Dyson V6 Mattress, a handheld vacuum designed specifically to reduce the dust mite population in your mattress. Other companies have used things like UV lights and vibration, but Dyson’s team of microbiologists have been researching this problem for years. Their discovery is that the best way to kick out these uninvited squatters is to cut off their food supply. In other words – you! Just kidding, not humans in particular, but the skin cells we shed. The most effective way to do that is with powerful suction.
When we received our Dyson V6 Mattress vacuum, despite having a fear of housework I was eager to put it to the test. Both of my children, as well as I, suffer from asthma and my young son also has eczema. 🙁 If there was a machine that could help us reduce the potential cause of this suffering than we needed to give it a whirl. The first thing I liked is that the Dyson V6 Mattress is a handheld vacuum. This made it a lot easier to stretch across a queen size bed and get down the sides. The machine has a good handle for gripping to, so it doesn’t slip on you.
I like that it has a really powerful motorized brush bar, that pivots as you push it. This means that your contact with your mattress, the suction, is constant. The brush bristles are made of a stiff nylon that you can literally feel digging into your mattress to stir up the dust mites so they can sucked up. This is all done without causing any pulling on the fibers, leaving your mattress intact. The Dyson V6 Mattress comes with a couple of extra tools for the hard to reach spots. We have a frame that our mattress sits in, so the long, thin tool is perfect for getting down the side.
One benefit of the Dyson V6 Mattress that you will not even be aware of is that with the HEPA filter it expels cleaner air than the air you are already breathing in. You have to love that! Dyson has our safety in mind, right down to the emptying of the bin. With just the push of a button you can release the waste into the garbage without touching any of it.
Even though it is not really possible to see that your mattress is clean, we definitely felt it. The mattress felt more comfy and fresh. I know that sounds strange, but I believe that knowing we had reduced the amount of dust mites and their baggage, we slept better too. So why not give the gift of a better, cleaner, healthier sleep to those on your gift list this year and pick up a Dyson V6 Mattress vacuum.
You can follow along with Dyson on Twitter and Facebook. Make sure to visit their site to shop the range of all their great vacuums.
So, did I gross you out a little bit? Does it make you want to run out and get a Dyson V6 Mattress? 🙂

I do vacuum my mattress using my regular vacuum, but I don’t feel that it’s the cleanest method – that vacuum brush has been on the floor too. It would be great to have a dedicated tool for mattress refreshing. Thank you!

We do vacuum our mattress with a regular Dyson vacuum, but only do it about 1/year. We have a mattress cover and wash it a couple of times per year……I would LOVE to get this Dyson and get rid of ALL unwanted intruders!

Dyson is an awesome vacuum wish I had one but I can’t justify buying one at that price.
MapleMouseMama says
I guess it depends on your needs Samantha. For us, with the allergies etc we have to deal with, it makes sense for the long haul, but you definitely need to decide based on your own needs.

I’d love one of these, sure would make vacuuming my mattress so much easier, but as others have already said it’s too pricey for just vacuuming a mattress, still when I win the lottery I’ll keep it in mind 🙂
