First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day takes place on April 22nd and this year it falls on a Sunday. The point of Earth Day is to show your support for protecting the environment and this is done through various events, fundraisers and information sessions that help to bring awareness to the problems our planet is facing. While we have a long way to go to repair the damage we have done to Mother Earth and her support system, there has been significant improvement in the forty-eight years since Earth Day started.
Of the biggest threats to our planet is plastic and what is done with it. Years ago our landfills were over-flowing with shopping bags, water bottles, containers etc and while a good deal of the plastic used today is still not recycled properly, we are making headway in using less of it. Take shopping bags that you get at the grocery store; today most stores charge you to use plastic bags which is to encourage you to bring your own reusable bags with you. Small steps, but they do help.
Our good friends at AVEENO® believe taking care of our planet is something we all need to be concerned about and they want to share with you ways that you can care for both your skin AND the planet!
Firstly, choose eco-minded products like those from AVEENO, which are made using the finest ingredients from nature and packaged in recycled and recyclable materials. Once you have finished your favourite bottle of AVEENO Daily Moisturizing Lotion, follow three simple steps to recycle your empties:
- Remove the pump and discard (most pumps are made of too many types of plastic to be recyclable).
- Rinse your empty bottle.
- Toss in your recycling bin or upcycle!
Another tip is to use a divided trash bin in your bathroom (recycling is for more than just the kitchen!). Designate one side for recyclable items, like your AVEENO bottle and the other side for non-recyclable items, like the pump. We have been keeping a bin like this in our bathroom for awhile now and I am always amazed at how much we are able to recycle. This also teaches my kiddos to be careful what they throw away and what they recycle.
The more you know about recycling, the more earth-friendly you can be every day; it’s that easy to reduce waste – just in time to make your spring cleaning even cleaner! Even small acts like recycling your empty lotion bottle can make a big impact when it comes to caring for our beautiful planet.

Once you learn about the major planets that are around us and the other space items that are revolving around ‘out there’, you will see a picture of the earth as taken from a spaceship, It really impresses upon the viewer that we are so very lucky to live on this planet and you will want to do everything that you can to keep it healthy. What about that horrible site of the huge field of garbage that is floating in the ocean? Thanks for this blog, Suzanne!
