Check out this entertaining review of Disney’s “Into The Woods” by our contributor Lindsey Reeder of reederreads.com! You can check out Lindsey’s bio as well. Thanks for the great review Lindsey!
A few weeks prior to Into the Woods movie premiere hit theatres, I had a friend that offered ’10 friendship points’ to the friend that managed to score early screening passes to the Toronto viewing of the new Disney movie starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Anna Kendrick (to name a few). Lucky for me, I was the friend that got to collect those friendship points, because on December 17th, a week before it’s opening, we went to see Into the Woods! You’ll be happy to know, I managed to score an extra 10 points after the movie was over, because the film was that good, to which I had nothing to do with, but I claimed them anyway.
As many of you might already know, Into the Woods is a musical production that debuted in 1986 and hit the Broadway stage in 1987. I knew some of the premise of the musical prior to entering the theatre, but just in case you don’t, a haggard witch is determined to reclaim her beautiful looks by tasking a childless baker and his wife to obtain magical items from classical fairy tales to reverse the curse she put on their family tree years ago. Determined to start a family of their own, the baker and wife set off to find four objects:
- A cow as white as milk
- A cape as red as blood
- Hair as yellow as corn
- A slipper as pure as gold
*Please note, the way I remember all these items so vividly is because there’s a catchy tune in the film that Emily Blunt sings in order to remember all the items and it turns out her memory trick worked… on me!
The only way to obtain all of these items is for this couple to enter the woods. Things happen in the woods that don’t happen anywhere else and the childless couple are determined to break the curse placed on them. Now in an effort not to give too much away, I will say that they do a good job, but then things take an ugly turn…
When I went to see the film, there were some children under the age of 12 and halfway through the film, I saw their parents getting up and removing them from the theatre. This makes sense, because there are some really dark and scary things taking place in this film. Of course, they’re not too dark for the average person, but if parents walk into this movie expecting cute talking mice and a funny looking wolf, you’ll be sadly disappointed. If the Grimm Brothers and Walt Disney had made a movie, it would be Into the Woods. It was smart, sad, touching and in true Disney style ended with a happily ever after. The music was AMAZING and almost two weeks later, I still can’t help singing all the different songs from the movie and was forced to have to go buy the soundtrack, which in all honesty, was a very good life choice.
Go see this movie, you will love it and you will marvel at how fantastic and talented Meryl Streep is… I promise!
Will you see Into The Woods this winter?

Can’t wait to see this on the big screen. I’m such a fan of the original Broadway version that aired on PBS, starring Bernadette Peters. I only wish I could’ve gone to see the revival version that featured Vanessa L. Williams as The Witch!
