Summer is upon us and everyone just wants to go, go, go! (like to these awesome places in Canada!) After being cooped up all winter the inclination is to shed those warm woollies and embrace the sunshine. I get it, totally, but the heat, those gorgeous yellow rays and the fun of the hottest season of the year can bring you crashing down fast if you don’t take care of yourself first. If you want to have a healthy and enjoyable summer take heed and make a point of following these tips to ensure it remains that way.
1) Water Is Your Best Friend
- Everyone knows the importance of staying hydrated. Drinking lots of water will do that AND help cool you down on those hot, humid days. Don’t like plain ole water? Add some pizzazz with drink crystals or even fresh fruit! It’s important to refuel your body so you can keep your energy levels up, up, up!
2) Get Hydrated, not Drunk!
- I am just like everyone else and enjoy an alcoholic beverage once in awhile. Summer is great for fun drinks, but alcohol can sap you of your energy and make the sun’s rays feel like you are living, well, ON the sun. Use moderation when consuming alcohol and avoid hard liquor. Switch it up with a cold beer or wine spritzer instead.
3) Fruits & Veggies Are Our Friends
- I love that summer gives us an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies to enjoy. Yummy salads for lunch instead of a heavy burger will help you keep going throughout the day. Be creative and put in things you wouldn’t normally, like a bit of cheese, for protein and lots of sweet berries. Shred some carrots and mix in different greens to vary your meals each day.
4) Mama Says “Take Your Vitamins”
- In the winter, we make sure to take our daily vitamins to keep ourselves as healthy as possible during those long, cold months, but it is equally as important to maintain this routine in the summer. Spend those glorious days of freedom feeling your best! Vitafusion™ Men’s Complete Multivitamin and Women’s Complete Multivitamin are a quick and delicious way to ensure you get your daily dose of vitamins all year round!
5) Protect What Your Mama Gave You
- It can not be stressed enough how important it is to use sunscreen ALL THE TIME when you plan to be outdoors in the summer. It is easy to forget how damaging the sun’s rays can be, especially when frolicking at the beach or running around outside. Take five minutes to apply and re-apply as needed, especially after swimming or sweating a lot. A good hat with a wide bring will help protect you from the heat and a good pair of sunglasses can not be overrated. Shades, as my hubby calls them, can look good on your face and protect you from getting cataracts! #LearnSomethingNewEveryDay
6) Get Busy, Enjoy the Summer & Stress Less
- Summer is the best time to move your exercise routine from the gym to the outdoors. Ride a bike, take a walk or go for a swim at the beach. Have fun with your exercise and get the kids involved by tossing water balloons, blowing giant bubbles or have a relay race in your backyard. The neighborhood kids will love it and their parents will love you.
No matter what you do you are guaranteed to lower your stress levels with each giggle.
7) Sleep Tight!
- The temptation to stay up late during the summer is great, especially for kids. The warm air invites you to hang out on the deck longer and pretty soon it is hours past your normal bedtime. The best thing you can do for your children and yourself is to get lots of rest. Keep your kiddos on the same bedtime schedule they have during the school year (or as close to it as possible) and make sure you head to bed for the right amount of shuteye.
So head out there and enjoy the summer! Create new memories, stay hydrated and healthy. Be good to yourself and most of all, have fun!
What is your favourite summer beverage to have when you want to relax and take the heat off? I like a nice, ice cold beer.

Good pointers here, thanks for sharing. It’s so important to stay properly hydrated during the heat, children often don’t want to stop playing to drink but they have to children become dehydrated very quickly.
