With the holidays almost upon us many people are making lists and checking them twice, but they aren’t for Santa. Those lists are for the traveling they will be embarking upon during the busiest travel time of the year! Maybe they will be jetting off to someplace hot or packing their snow boots for a mountainside ski lodge. Perhaps the journey will end at grandma’s house where dozens of relatives come together every year. Wherever that trip might take you, they all have one thing in common – you need to be prepared for anything.
The first step to a successful journey is a well-packed bag. Forgetting something important can put a damper on your holiday fun. (Can you imagine hitting up the beach in some southern climate and realizing you forgot your swimsuit at home?!) That’s why I have put together this handy list of items you may have forgotten to pack. Some of them may surprise you!
- Documents: Do you have your passport, itinerary, booking reference codes and insurance forms packed? A misplaced bag at the airport or hotel could leave you stranded. Make sure to back up your documents with an online copy. Use a secure place like Google Drive that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. When we travel I always take a photo of our passports, any traveler’s cheques and other id we have with us, just in case.
- Comfy shoes: No matter what you’re travelling for, you can bet you will be doing lots of walking. Make sure to pack a comfy pair of shoes that will keep you going all day. Consider packing a pair of slippers or house shoes as well. You never know how cold the floor might be in a winter setting.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Not only will you save money by bringing your own water along, it’s also a helpful reminder to stay hydrated throughout your trip. This is especially important if you are going somewhere hot or will be doing lots of activities.
- RestoraLAX: Traveler’s constipation is very common thanks to the lack of physical movement while in transit, stress and change in diet. RestoraLAX is an easy way to restore your body’s natural rhythm. Dissolve RestoraLAX into your favourite hot or cold drink – there’s no grit or taste!
- Headphones: Make sure to pack your favourite pair of headphones so you can zone-out and enjoy yourself on the journey, chill-out on the beach or even block out the commotion of other travelers during the holidays.
- Allergy medication: You’ve probably packed your vitamins, deodorant, glasses and toothbrush, but did you pack your allergy medication? Going to a different climate or environment can expose you to potential allergens and make for an unpleasant trip. Claritin Rapid Dissolve gives you non-drowsy, 24-hour allergy symptom relief, so you can enjoy every second of your vacation. These dissolve instantly on your tongue so you don’t need water. From the ocean, to the mountains, you can take it anywhere!
- Snacks: Traveling can be stressful for everyone, but doing so while hungry is so much worse, especially if you are traveling with children. Plan ahead and bring some snacks that everyone can enjoy and that pack well, like raisins, dry cereal and granola bars. Be sure to check with airlines though as they sometimes have restrictions on what you can bring on board.
- Wipes and Hand Sanitizer: I do not go anywhere without having at least wipes in my bag. They are great for cleaning up messing hands and faces, as well as wiping down tables and other potentially dirty surfaces. Small bottles of hand sanitizer are great for helping keep the germs at bay when you don’t have soap and water handy.
- Ziploc Baggies: Now this might seem like a strange thing to have on hand, but ziploc bags have so many uses. They are perfect for storing leftovers from a lunch that didn’t get finished, keeping a child’s crayons and papers together for use later or even for storing garbage until you find a suitable place to dispose of it. (Think dirty diapers!) I like to put my kids bathing suits and sunblock in a zip up bag for storage and then to put the wet suit in afterward. 🙂
- Safety Pins and Band-aids: In case of a wardrobe malfunction, a safety pin works wonders and band-aids speak for themselves. Keep several of each of these in difference sizes (in a ziploc bag) and you will have a mini emergency kit always handy.
What unexpected travel items can you never leave at home? I would love to know so please leave your suggestions in the comments below and happy travels!

Love this list! Glad to see that I’m not the only one who brings ziplock baggies!
I also bring a mini travel sewing kit.

Ziplocs are a lifesaver! I use them all the time, even when we are not traveling. But great idea including a mini sewing kit. There is always a need for one of those. 🙂

I always bring laundry soap and dryer sheets and as for the ziploc bags, you should bring one big enough to keep the remote in so you’re not contaminating your hands when watching tv.
