When my husband and I bought our first home together, I was happy to see lots of children out playing in their yards, riding on bikes and just having fun together. The sounds of laughter reminded me of my youth, when we never had to be coerced into playing outside and we could, in fact, stay out until the street lights came on. It was practically unheard of to be playing inside when the weather was good and good weather didn’t have to mean sunshine and warmth. We loved to be out of doors when it was cloudy, cold, raining or even snowing.
Playing outside was not only a way for us to get exercise that we were probably not even aware we were getting, it was also a great way to make friends and instill good habits. I guess that is why it saddens me that times have changed so much now. Twenty years after moving into our home, the number of children playing outside each day has dwindled and I am hard-pressed to get my own kiddos outside each day. I can blame technology, laziness or even too much homework, but whatever the reason, the simple fact is that children are not moving enough; inside the house or outside of it.
That is what makes the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s Healthy Kids Day initiative such a wonderful idea! On Sunday, April 29th, the YMCA will be opening its doors at 2:00pm to families for an afternoon of fun, FREE activities that will offer you an opportunity to see and experience what the Y has to offer (see links for centre specifics below.) As an added bonus if you sign up for a membership on Healthy Kids Day, the YMCA of Greater Toronto will waive the joining fee (a savings of up to $120.00!)
Just think of the good habits you can instill in your kids now, while they are young. And participating in the activities on Healthy Kids Day together will show them that you are committed to getting healthy together. Truth be told, as parents we know that physical activity is a must for our kids to be well balanced, but it is equally important for us too. At the YMCA they have such a wide variety of things to do that getting in the suggested sixty minutes of daily activity will be easy. Being active together is also a way to show your children the other benefits of exercise, like reducing the risks of getting certain diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
I hope you all take in an afternoon of fun, FREE activities at the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s Healthy Kids Day this coming weekend (Sunday, April 29th) and perhaps even sign up for a future of healthy days. You can learn more about the Y that is closest to you by checking the links below.

Swimming is the way to go but they also have so many other classes like equalize and of coarse the gym.

Sorry for the spelling, equalize,. I find the letters on the keyboard of my tablet so close that it spells the way it wants.
