When I first received a copy of the 50th Anniversary Edition of Disney’s “Mary Poppins” I was giddy with excitement. I just love this movie and even more so, I love sharing it with my daughter. Emily has seen the “regular” version before, but just knowing this classic was celebrating fifty years made it more of an event to view. I think I was humming MP classics like “A Spoon Full of Sugar” and “Feed the Birds” for days afterwards..sigh.. With all of the movies available today there is just something wholesome and good about watching “Mary Poppins” with your kiddos.
We all know that “Mary Poppins” starred Julie Andrews in the title role as the no nonsense nanny with a penchant for magic. Did you know that playing Mary earned Dame Julie her first Academy Award? Of course we can’t leave out Bert, played by Dick Van Dyke as Mary’s jack-of-all-trades “friend”. Another fun fact is that Mr. Van Dyke also played a second role in “Mary Poppins” as Mr. Dawes Senior, the bank chairman, although he was hard to recognize.
The Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary edition has been digitally restored to bring new life to this already wonderful movie. This classic musical could not get any better as far as the talent, songs and story line go, but this release just seems a bit brighter and more vibrant! It will blow you away and you will find yourself watching it more then once. 🙂
Oh, and even the bonus features are a hoot! Mary OKE lets you sing along to some of those iconic songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, “Step In Time” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” while providing the words so you don’t get tripped up!
In the bonus feature “Becoming Mr. Sherman” the actor Jason Schwartzman, who portrays Richard Sherman, one half of the brilliant composing team of the Sherman Brothers, in the new movie “Saving Mr. Banks” sits down to chat with the Richard Sherman himself. There is even a sneak peek of “Saving Mr. Banks”!
I am not an expert movie reviewer by any stretch, but I do speak from my heart. Get a copy of Disney’s Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary and be a kid again. You might even want to “go fly a kite” afterward. 🙂
What is your most favorite song from “Mary Poppins”?

I also heard a rumour that everyone was very dissappoited with Dick Van Dyke’s “Accent.” He was so mad at this he said he would never do an accent in any movie again! (i.e. watch “Chitty chitty Bang Bang) Great Movie!!

I was definitely an adult when this movie came out and I have never had children…..but….I distinctly remember having a sense of ‘pride of accomplishment’ when I could say….“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”! Nice review. Suz! 🙂

Mary Poppins is always shown at Christmas over here. I can remember watching it as a small child on Christmas Day and now I watch it with my children! It’s one of the few Disney movies that we don’t own, so I’ll have to put a copy of the 50th anniversary DVD on my wish list! xx
