Today marks the release of the highly anticipated, live-action adaptation of Disney’s The Jungle Book! Our contributor, Lindsey Reeder, recently attended an advanced screening in Toronto and here is what she had to say about it.

On Wednesday evening, I had the pleasure of going to see a sneak preview of The Jungle Book. It’d be hard to miss that a movie about the beloved book and cartoon from 1967 was being made into a feature film once again, but this time with computer generated animals and a real boy. There are posters all over the subway and there was even a filter dedicated to the movie on SnapChat this week, so you can’t say you didn’t know this movie was coming to the big screen. But one thing that might be an oversight is who is voicing the main characters, er, um, animals. Let me name a few to give you some context:
- Bill Murray
- Ben Kingsley
- Idris Elba
- Scarlett Johansson
- And my favourite… Christopher Walken
What a star-studded cast! With such a roster of talent, is there any doubt that it would a wonderful film?
I’m sure most of us have a vague understanding of The Jungle Book story or at least could sing a few lines from The Bare Necessities, but watching this world come to life with talking animals and a charming young boy named Neel Sethi, who played the role of Mowgli, was a real treat. It was a live-action film that will have you on the edge of your seat. Its stunning visual components, mixed with a voyage in the jungle, was a perfect way to spend an evening.
There was a bit of a struggle for me on whether or not the film was appropriate for young children, as there were many scenes that caused me to jump out of my seat and cover my eyes. As the ending neared and there was an epic man vs animal battle, I did see several parents take their child out of the theatre, as the scenes were quite frightening. I would say that if you have a child under 10, you might want to consider another film. That being said, don’t just categorize it in the “kid movie” genre, adults will love the walk down memory lane and will definitely leave humming I Want to Be Like You… Highly, highly recommended.
