Everyone’s opinion of what makes a movie good is going to vary and that includes a comedy. I love a movie that not only makes me laugh at the antics of the characters, but also fall a little bit in love with them. I want to feel their pain while I am laughing at them. Okay, that sounded bad. What I meant to say was that I want to get to know them on a human level, because I do believe it makes the movie more enjoyable. And memorable. Films have come a long way what with all the fabulous action hits and crazy spy movies there are, but they can sometimes overlap one another. Give me a good comedy and I will come back to it time and again.
That can be said for Daddy’s Home starring Will Ferrell of Saturday Night Live acclaim and Mark Wahlberg of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch fame. This hilarious and heart-warming movie is about an overly sensitive stepdad, Brad Whitaker (Ferrell), who is trying very hard to get his two stepchildren to love him and call him Dad. He forgives any little thing they do and shows them unconditional love. We can see that any gains he has made in the relationship has taken a long time and it kind of annoyed me how rude the kids could be to Brad. Soon we see the return of the kid’s biological dad Dusty (Wahlberg) and the competition is on to win the affections of the kiddos. You can just imagine the one-upmanship that ensues. Will Ferrell is a favourite of mine and he did not disappoint in Daddy’s Home. I am not used to Mark Wahlberg in a comedic role, but he did a good job.
