The end of a long, cold winter is a highly anticipated event in our home, but even though the spring season brings about new life and rebirth, it can also harbor things that trigger nasal congestion and colds. Beautifully singing birds, leaves budding on the trees and colourful flowers will make anyone want to head outdoors, but as soon as it gets hard to breathe, it’s back inside to escape. And that is no way to welcome spring! So if it makes adults uncomfortable, you can just imagine how a baby might feel when they can’t breathe due to nasal congestion.
It used to break my heart when my children, too young to speak ‘”real” words, would get so congested. They had no way to tell me how difficult it was to breathe and they were too young to clear their noses. As most parents of older children know, it can take many years for a child to learn to blow their nose properly, so babies will definitely need help with this chore. Fortunately, I have learned a trick or two that will help you relieve your baby’s nasal congestion. As we head into the season of change, I hope these tips will help your child feel better.
Tips To Relieve Baby Nasal Congestion
Prevention Is Key
No one likes to get sick so the best thing to do is practice things that will prevent you or your baby from getting a cold in the first place. Wash your hands often, dress for the weather and sneeze into your elbow if you feel the urge. Cover your mouth with the back of your hand or arm if you cough. Try to keep the germs at bay by wiping surfaces down with an anti-bacterial cleaner and don’t let your kiddos play with other little ones who are sick.
Drink Up!
Staying hydrated is important for a lot of reasons, but when you are not feeling well we tend to let things slide. Things like eating or drinking. When it comes to babies, their only source of nutrition is liquid so allowing them to not drink is never an option. Babies can become dehydrated quickly, so even getting your little one to drink some water from a dropper or milk from a sippy cup is a good idea.
Sleep Like A Baby
This trick has always helped me get a good night’s sleep whenever I was stuffed up, so when my daughter had her first bout of baby nasal congestion it made sense to try this tip on her. The idea is to elevate your head, or your child’s, just enough to allow the congestion to drain a bit or not build up in the first place. Adults can use a pillow, but an infant should never have anything like that in their crib, so just how do you prop up a baby? Well, you can actually buy special blocks that go under the legs of the crib to raise the head up by an inch or so. They are inexpensive to purchase and very sturdy so your child is always safe.
Use hydraSense Baby Nasal Care
Cold season was never the same again in our home once we started to use hydraSense Baby Nasal Care. Using the hydraSense Ultra-Gentle Mist helped to open up and clear tiny nasal passages and it was easy to use. The soft texture of the comfort tip did not disturb my little ones and the steady spray of solution made it easy to tolerate. As a parent I love that hydraSense is 100% naturally sourced seawater and is free of medications and preservatives. In fact, it is the number one choice of moms all across Canada!
Combined with the Nasal Aspirator, the hydraSense Ultra-Gentle Mist would help to keep the dryness at bay and effectively reduce the accumulation of mucus in my children’s noses. I still keep the EasyDose vials on hand for taking with me when we leave the house. They are great for on-the-go relief for baby and for mom. 🙂
Cold or Hot?
Setting up a cold-mist humidifier in your child’s room is a good way to help clear their nasal passages and make sleeping a bit easier. There are many varieties of these machines on the market, so make sure to do some research before purchasing one and always follow the instructions for use. The water should be changed frequently to prevent mold. Alternatively, bringing your baby into the bathroom while running a hot shower can help clear their airway a bit as well.
