It seems like this year we had two winters and than practically overnight we started to experience spring-like weather. We went from winter boots to rain gear in the blink of an eye. And now summer is right around the corner and with the warm weather and outdoor activities comes sunburns and unwanted allergies. Both can keep you from enjoying fun in the sun. I have already noticed that I am getting that stuffed up feeling in the morning and I know that is because of the change in seasons. It is time to be smart and take the necessary precautions to make the most of the sunny days that are ahead.
Preparing for the warm weather and everything it brings us is kind of like the spring cleaning you do around the house. Here are some of the things I do to get and stay summer smart:
- Enjoy the sun – responsibly! Making a conscious choice to keep your skin happy and healthy is crucial all year, but especially in the summer season. Finding the right sunscreen can be challenging, but the new Coppertone ClearlySheer Whipped leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized. The rich and creamy foam absorbs quickly while protecting me from the sun’s harmful rays. Experience has taught me to always have the sunscreen on hand for myself and especially for the kiddos. After a long day at school you know they will need to reapply if you head to the park before going home.
- Treat the tootsies. Okay, so maybe getting a pedicure has nothing to do with being summer smart, but it will make you feel great about wearing sandals again. And if you take care of your feet they will take care of you. 🙂
- Don’t sweat it. Staying active and exploring the outdoors is an integral part of a successful summer. But when you sweat, there are extra steps you need to take to be sun safe, including hydrating more often and choosing a sunscreen that can take the heat. For sunscreen, the Coppertone Sport Sunscreen Stick has you covered. It stays on strong when you sweat. And now that my children have started their team sports, it is even more important to make sure we carry an extra stick in our equipment bags.
- Hats off! Or rather, hats on. As the sun starts to warm the earth, it will also be warming your head and the rest of your body. It is time to gather up the head hard-wear and keep it handy for the whole family. Remind your kiddos to grab a hat on their way out the door and they will be glad you did.
- Don’t overdo it. We all want to make the most of the beautiful weather but knowing your limits and taking appropriate breaks is important to enjoying the summer responsibly. Monitor your breathing and heat levels. If your body is telling you to rest and cool down, make sure you listen.
- Treat your seasonal allergies. With the blooms and buds comes pollen. A runny nose, sneezing and tearing of the eyes can force us indoors, depriving us from enjoying those glorious summer days. The minute my allergies started acting up, I took Aerius. It gives me multi-symptom 24-hour relief. Aerius is non-drowsy so it can help you function normally, both at school and at work. And it means the start of my day is not delayed feeling stuffed and head-achy.
- Water, water everywhere. You will very rarely, if ever, find me without a water bottle on hand. I have to have one with me at all times. And the summer time is no time to be caught without one. Even if you are not thirsty, you should be drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated in the heat. The best way to ensure you do is to make sure you always have a bottle with you. You can even refill at fountains for free!

It’s common knowledge now that you should always wear sunscreen but when I was growing up we used oil or anything else to encourage a tan; my how the times have changed because now I don’t leave the house without SPF 50 all over my exposed skin.
