The end of the year – holiday season – is full of fun. Whether you are shopping for your family, trying out recipes for the neighbourhood cookie exchange, decorating your house or hopping from one party to the next each weekend, people are always on the go. But like all good things, the high we feel at this time of the year always comes to an end and for many people that crash can really zap you of your happiness. Pretty soon the decorations are put away, the party invites dry up and we are faced with sub zero temperatures and storms. This is usually when the winter blues set in.
Aside from feeling less than happy, the blues can wear you down, make you feel tired and leave you with little energy to get through your day to day routine. While this time of the year can be somewhat daunting to face, the last thing you should do is give in to those feelings. Beating the winter blues can be a challenge, but I have a few ideas to help you out. I have suffered my share of the blues so I speak from experience when I say doing whatever you can to help yourself is worth the effort. Here are some suggestions:
The Importance of Nutrition
Staying healthy is super important to staying happy! It is hard to stay energized and at our best if our body is not getting the vitamins it needs. I find it can be challenging to get the vitamins I need on a daily basis, so I use a multivitamin to fill in the gaps. One a Day Gummies helps with this, plus I look forward to the delicious taste of the gummy every day. Don’t forget about the kids, they can have the winter blahs too! FLINTSTONES Active Kids Gummies can help bridge dietary gaps as a source of vitamins and minerals in a convenient and tasty gummy and are great for picky eaters.
Take It Outside
Don’t let the cold weather keep you inside. Put on some snow gear, lace up your boots and have a snowball fight with the kiddos! Make snow angels in your backyard or get the neighbourhood to host a snowman building contest. Go for a scavenger hunt in the local park and don’t forget to bring some seeds for the animals. Getting outside in the cold can lift your mood instantly and just think how happy the squirrels will be when you provide dinner for the day!
Beat The Blues With Blooms
Brighten up your scenery with fresh flowers and plants. Spring may not be blooming outside, but there’s no reason why you can’t have fresh foliage in your office and home. I find that having flowers and plants in my work space increase creativity, improve my mood and even reduce anxiety. There is something peaceful about a pretty bloom. They are like a smile from Mother Nature. 🙂
Let Music Set You Free
Listen to upbeat music that makes you happy. It sounds easy, but I often forget how much music can change my mood and make a dark, cold day a little bit more cheerful. Think about it; when a song you know comes on the radio you can’t help but sing along or at the very least hum. Music is an instant mood lifter and when you are happier, anxiety and stress melt away. In my home we have this added bonus: my kiddos can’t help but dance to a good song which inevitably means we are all dancing. It’s a win-win situation!
Breathe Easier
Keep nasal cold symptoms away. Does anyone else feel like they always have at least a BIT of a cold this time of year? There’s nothing worse than walking around with a stuffed or running nose. I like to use hydraSense Daily Nasal Care to alleviate these nasal cold symptoms. It’s effective at relieving nasal congestion, making it easier to breathe, so you can stop being that person who sniffles all day.
Game Night
While we have game night at various times throughout the year, having something fun to look forward to during the long winter evenings is a must for beating the winter blues in our home. We all help decide, in advance, what snacks to have and which games to play so even the buildup to game night gives us a boost. You can take it one step further and invite some friends over to help make the atmosphere more festive.
Dreaming, Maybe Planning
Now this may sound strange, but nothing helps me get through the blues better than thinking about and planning our next family vacation. Making lists, checking out websites and flipping through photos from past adventures takes us out of the winter and into whatever dreamland we want. And even if you don’t have a winter escape planned, you can always research things to do on the weekend, like visiting an indoor pool or museum. I love the planning, but the dreaming is just as much fun!
I hope these tips help you and your loved ones to beat the winter blues this year. What are some of the little things you do to stay positive? Do you find it a challenge at this time of year? I would love to hear from you in the comments.
