Despite being the mama of two older kiddos, the toys I remember from my youth are fresh in my mind. Many of them have made a comeback or really never left, despite all the new fangled things for sale. When the toy catalogues are sent out in the mail, my children know that mama has to have a look through them first. 🙂 And even though my youngest is 12 and still enjoys playing with some toys, he is more of a gamer. Like myself, my daughter, who is technically an adult now (what???) still likes to look at the dolls. So the toy books do get a good look through. They allow me to pretend the clock has turned back a few years. ♥Â
Oh, The Toys I Remember
Thomas & Friends
Based on a series of children’s books “Thomas & Friends,” which have been around since the 1940’s, the beloved Thomas has been a part of the lives of pretty much everyone I know, both my age and my kids. Thomas is an icon in both children’s television and toys. If you searched my basement very carefully, I am sure you will come across a certain set of locomotives, just waiting to be played with again. And there are some really great new additions available to delight your kiddos now. Have a look.
Thomas & Friends Race & Chase R/C
The large, remote-controlled Thomas and Percy train engines are linked together with a steam cloud carrying handle. They feature realistic train sounds and character phrases from the show! There is lots of action to be had when your little is controlling all of the exciting race action with the toddler-friendly remote. It is perfect for those who are ages 3 and up.
Thomas & Friends Trains and Cranes Super Tower
This mighty tower brings to life all of the exciting racing, chasing, loading and unloading a kid can handle. Standing at over 2 & 1/2 feet tall, this multi-level train and track set features favourite places and characters from the show, with a spinning turntable, three cranes to load and unload cargo and plenty of track for the engines to zoom around. With lots of switches and handles to play with, your little conductor decides where the engines should go. You can use this set with other Thomas & Friends tracks, except for the wood ones. Trust me when I say, this will engage your preschooler for hours.Â
Thomas & Friends 2-in-2 Transforming Thomas Playset
This awesome train set features a large push-along Thomas, which stores die-cast engines inside and large passenger cars Annie & Clarabel, which open to reveal all the pieces kids need to build out a full track set. The 2-in-1 Transforming Thomas Playset comes with a die-cast, push-along Percy engine, a working Cranky the Crane and cool, elevated track pieces for gravity-defying railway play.Â
Talking Thomas & Percy Train Set
Featuring several classic Island of Sodor locations from the show, this lovely set has motorized Thomas and Percy engines who actually stop to talk with each other when they meet on the track! How cool is that. 🙂 Young conductors can help Thomas and Percy work together by dropping boulders down in the Blue Mountain cave for them to load and unload along with other cargo on Bulstrode the boat.
Thomas & Friends Bridge Lift & Skiff
This motorized train and track set features a battery-powered Thomas engine, a push-along Skiff and a child controlled bridge that lifts up at the push of a lever. Kids can push Skiff along the track or attach him to Thomas to send the duo racing around Sodor. Young conductors will love helping Skiff come ashore for a tune-up!
More Toys I RememberÂ
Playmobil
Playmobil has been around longer than the toys from Toy Story and they still keep coming up with new and awesome playset themes to entertain not only the youth of today, but also their parents! We have had a few Playmobil sets over the years and each one gets used over and over again. The reason for that is because you can create new stories and adventures every single time. Playmobil was also a featured regular at #BloggersFete. 🙂
Playmobil Volkswagen T1Â Camping Bus – Special Edition
I thought I would kick this off with a Playmobil item that really brings back all of the emotions of the toys I remember. This sweet Volkswagen T1 Camping Bus is a limited edition, reminiscent of the iconic surfer van and it is in a beautiful new colour! With cool chrome detailing and a furnished interior, your little surfer dudes and dudettes will be all set to hit the beach! Their surfboards can be attached to the roof when the sun goes to bed for the night. 🙂 Â
Playmobil Volkswagen Beetle Special Edition
Another cool toy from Playmobil that gives me all the feels. I always wanted my first car to be a Beetle when I was a youngster and while I never did get one, I can now live vicariously through this beautiful Special Edition Beetle that has been released in a sweet new colour. 🙂 It also has that special chrome detailing and comes with a ton of accessories for at-home car care. This is going to be so much fun!!
Playmobil Back To The Future DeLorean
This is the perfect example of how the toys I remember have become new favourites with today’s kids. We introduced our 12 year old to the BTTF franchise in the past year and he loves it! Between Marty McFly and Doc Brown in their outfits from 1985 and the great extras like a plutonium case, skateboard, remote control and Einstein, the dog, my son was not sure what to play with first – the DeLoren or everything else!
Playmobil The A-Team Van
Who remembers watching Mr. T.? I do, I do! Well, this is the iconic vehicle The A-Team, consisting of legendary ex-elite soldiers Hannibal, B.A., Face and Murdock, used for all of their daring special ops. It is chock full of interior equipment like a monitor, a welding machine and a bunch accessories any military dude would need. With just a bit of imagination, your kiddos will play for hours.Â
Cabbage Patch Kid- Rainbow Garden Cuties
Even though some of the Cabbage Patch kids look different from the originals, they are still pretty much the same – in a good way. And I would know. I received my one and only Cabbage Patch Kid when I was eleven and I loved that doll. I still have him (he is the bald baby boy ♥ ) tucked away for safe keeping. I even have his adoption certificate and he still smells faintly of baby powder. The newest produce from the Patch are so sweet! Rainbow Garden Cuties are 9 inches tall and they all come in bright colours and feature a soft snuggly onesie with a removable hood. Just like their predecessors, the Rainbow Garden Cuties are all named and numbered for the collectors out there. I think I might ask Santa for one this year. ♥
**************************
What a fun walk down memory lane that was. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to see and read about the toys I remember from my childhood and then see them being given new life for a new generation. No matter how many electronic games are released, I think that toys you can hold and hug and name, will never go out of style.
What was your favourite toy when you were a child? Do you still have it? Have you shared it with your own kids?

These are all great toys, my favourite is the VW Van, as I like to collect them. When growing up it was all about the Barbie dolls, I had everything!
MapleMouseMama says
That is so cool that you collect the VW Vans Lynda. That’s what is so great about toys like Playmobil, they are great for all ages. 🙂

They are also very well detailed, I know if I ended up getting the VW Van set, no one would be allowed to touch it.. lol

I don’t remember much of what I received but when my son was around 3 he received a cabbage patch and now I’m looking for a boy cabbage patch in Canada for my grandson.

I’m pretty sure I purchased most of those items for one of my 3 kids at some point, and now here they are back again. The best toys linger!

My favourite toys from my childhood were My Little Pony, Pound Puppies, Cabbage Patch Kids and Strawberry Shortcake. All are still around or have made a comeback. I still have all of the above and my kids now play with them.
