Today I would like to treat you to a review of the latest film from Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, as reviewed by my Toronto correspondent Lindsey Reeder!Β You can find Lindsey blogging about her love of books at Reeder Reads or on Twitter under @ReederReads.

On Thursday night, I had the pleasure of going to see the movie everyone claims will be the “summer blockbuster”, also known as Guardians of the Galaxy. And I’m here to tell you that the critics are right, this movie was AWESOME and the best part is that it has something in it for everyone!
To give you some real insight, this is the equation I’d use to explain the movie:
Star Wars + Indiana Jones + A Talking Raccoon = Guardians of the Galaxy
I’m not someone who loves comic book movie adaptations, but after hearing all the buzz, I thought I’d give this one a shot and I’m SO glad that I did. It was smart, insightful and hilarious. Oh and it didn’t hurt to stare at Chris Pratt’s rocking new body either. Chris Pratt plays the role of Peter Quill, a space outlaw who would like to be known as “Star-Lord”. When he steals a mysterious orb, he unexpectedly steals a power that can change the planet Xander forever. But he’s not the only one who wants the orb, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is sent to retrieve it by her master and let’s not forget the unlikely duo, Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel). They find out that there’s a bounty attached to capturing Peter/Star-Lord and will go to whatever lengths it takes to capture him. This cast, combined with wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista make an unlikely combination of superheroes, but each of them pull it off brilliantly.
Guardians of the Galaxy has all the right components of a comic book movie adaptation, but what I didn’t expect (and the people that sat beside us either) were all the laughs. The comic humour was so spot on; from references to Kevin Bacon’s dance revolution in Footloose to the adorable Groot, who spoke three words, I. Am. Groot. (in that order), the crowd was roaring with laughter. I’d highly recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. Not only would it make a perfect date movie, but it’s a perfect weekend afternoon film to catch with the kiddies (I’d say 8 & up) who will love the talking raccoon and talking tree.

I don’t know of any particular comic book that hasn’t already been made into a movie. BTW I’m glad to hear a great review. I’d like to see this.
MapleMouseMama says
LOL it’s true, I think they are all tapped out on new super heroes to write about. It will be interesting to see what the next big movie is about..
Casey Palmer says
Are we talking live action movies or including animated?
In Marvel comics, you’ve got: Namor the Sub-Mariner, Dr. Strange, Luke Cage, She-Hulk
In DC comics, there’s: Nightwing, Shazam, Supergirl, Superboy, Aquaman, Cyborg β and Wonder Woman, if you’re looking at the live-action films alone.
There’s still room for movie-making π
MapleMouseMama says
LOL, I guess I should have taken you seriously when you said “general nerdiness” π Casey, maybe you should pitch Marvel π
Casey Palmer says
LOL. I have a web comic I’ve wanted to draw for AGES.
Very long overdue!

I was never a comic book lover, I always did prefer proper books, you know, with lots of writing in them. Some of my children (now all adults) are still in love with comic books and this sort of film and I’m sure they’ve seen this movie too. π
