I know what you are thinking: summer is over, the cooler temps are setting in and I can no longer wear my white dress pants to work. That cliche that woman should not wear white after Labour Day is probably the one fashion rule that even I, a style challenged mama, knows is a bunch of hogwash. While nothing says summer like billowy white linens, this fashion staple is finding its place beyond the summer barbecue, pool party or cottage getaway. And when you think about it, there are so many variations of the colour white there is bound to be one that is perfect for you. And you, and you. 🙂
I think for many, the concern when wearing white goes beyond how flattering, or unflattering it is on you. When wearing white it is more so about keeping those whites in their original state. From food to deodorant stains, wearing white can sometimes be asking for trouble. Thankfully OxiClean™ White Revive™ Powder—fabric care winner of the 2015 Best New Product Awards—is specially formulated to maintain and revive your whites.
Here are five tips on ways you can say goodbye to the old adage “no white after Labour Day” and incorporate white into your wardrobe this fall and beyond!
Five ways to wear white after Labour Day
- Mix and match – pair white statement pieces with neutral colours like grey or tan to tone down the summer vibe for a sophisticated fall look
- Not over overalls – the 90’s staple is back with a vengeance! A perfect transitional piece as the days get cooler, mix a pair of white overalls with runners and your favourite dark cropped jacket for a cool urban fall look (yay, I think I still have mine!!)
- Say yes to the shearling – from boots to jackets to capes, shearling makes an appearance every fall. Incorporate a pop of white in your transitional wardrobe with shearling accents
- The not-so-blue jean – to balance out the summery feel of a pair of white denim jeans, pair with a distressed leather jacket in dark brown or a tan trench over coat for a more polished look
- Cool winter chic – stick to all white accessories like white cashmere gloves or a cable knit scarf to elevate your look as the months get colder
There you have it folks, five great ways to keep on wearing your whites well past Labour Day. And no one is saying it has to be pure white all the time. You’ve got other options like eggshell, cream, ivory, Navaho white, vanilla and even pearl. Then there’s off-white, linen, powder, champagne, ecru and bone. And that’s just to name a few. So don’t limit yourself and don’t be afraid to wear white all year round!
What is your favourite go-to white wardrobe piece?

I don’t think I own any white clothes for the same reasons you describe….they stain easily and lose their brightness over time. Plus I just don’t look good in white! This would be great for socks though in my household.

LOL, yup, our socks deserve some love too 🙂

I own a lot of white tops, but no bottoms because I cannot keep those clean lol! My current favourite is just a white tank top with a cute pocket, but it is going so well with the cooler weather under a few of my sweaters!
MapleMouseMama says
It is nice to be able to take them into different seasons. Lots of options that way!

I don’t wear white very well, therefore not too much in my closet. That being said I do have a couple of white tops and I will wear them in the fall and winter. But, I don’t think anyone looks good carrying a white purse or wearing white heels or flats after Labour Day , no matter what the fashion people say.
MapleMouseMama says
And you look lovely in them Mom 🙂

I’ve been waiting to wear it but, thankfully, it hasn’t been cold enough here yet. BUT, I know that cold weather is coming.

You can wear white any time you like as far as I’m concerned. For us, socks & T-shirts are practically the only things my son and I have in white.
Fan R says
Not much white clothes here, and with existing ones no where to go.
Laurie P says
All I have in white are some t shirts…..and a scarf!

Normally I never buy white clothing because it’ll get stained and ruined so quickly. But maybe this Oxi-Clean would make white-wearing feasible?! Thanks!
