Unfortunately one of the guarantees in life is that you will one day pass on. No one likes to think about death, at least as it pertains to themselves, and I totally get that; however, as responsible adults we have to to be prepared. One of the first things I think about when Estate Planning is the hot topic on the table is having a Last Will and Testament. This decision became even clearer once I became a parent. Many people think that a Will is something a person uses to make sure their favorite niece gets their fancy china or their dearest best friend gets that antique painting hanging in the downstairs hall, but a Will is so much more than that. A Will is piece of mind.
One the reasons many people don’t have a Will is because they assume it is too difficult to get one. You have to find a lawyer, make the appointment and decide who gets what and who will be in charge of your estate after you are gone. Not only is this route time consuming it is also expensive. When my husband and I were first married we could not find the extra five hundred dollars the lawyer would charge us to draw up Wills for both of us, so we didn’t do them. Once we had children our opinions changed and we knew that a Will was a must.
Getting a Will does not have to be terribly time consuming and better yet it does not have to expensive. Recently I had the opportunity to check out FormalWill.ca, which is Canada’s leader in online Legal Wills. The idea behind FormalWill.ca is to be able to create your own Will, from the comfort of your home and all for a fraction of the cost you would pay a lawyer to create the very same item. The Wills that are produced are tailored to each province and territory in Canada so you can rest assured you are including the right information.
For a mere $69.00 (including tax) you can prepare your Will in minutes with FormalWill.ca. Registering is easy as you are only required to provide an email. From start to finish I had to complete only five steps and it literally took me ten minutes. Some Wills will take longer as you can include a break down of gifts you may want to give or items you want to share with loved ones and that is fine. It is your Will so it is tailored to you. Once you are satisfied with the completed Will and you submit it, it will be emailed to you right away, along with an instruction letter. There is no waiting period, no snail mail to wait for.
**Please note that your Will is only valid once it has been signed in front of witnesses. This information is outlined in the instruction letter you will receive.
Be sure and check out FormalWill.ca on Twitter and Facebook. For the sake of your loved ones you owe it to yourself to set up a Will today. We never know what tomorrow will bring, but by using FormalWill.ca you can be prepared.
Do you have a Last Will and Testament yet? If not, what are the reasons you have held off in getting one?

THIS is the service I’ve been looking for! My husband and I promised each other we’d do our will in 2015, so now there’s now excuse.
MapleMouseMama says
That is great to hear Lindsay, good for you! It is very reasonable cost wise so you can’t go wrong..

Excellent reminder, Suzanne!

My husband and I have been discussing starting up a will a lot lately. Now that we’re parents, it seems like the proper thing to do. My biggest fear is that my son will end up in social care (even if it’s just for one night). I want to make sure he has proper guardians and that the money is put in a trust for him (that I can still control from the grave haha).
MapleMouseMama says
LOL Randa, funny, but you make a great point. It is awful to have to think of, but knowing your child will be safe and happy due to some forethought is what’s important.
Aeryn Lynne says
I don’t have one yet, cause up until recently there wasn’t anything to sort out, lol. Will have to look into this further, thanks for the heads up! 🙂
MapleMouseMama says
Glad to be of assistance Aeryn 🙂
Kerrie @ Family Food and Travel says
I have a Will but need to revise it now that I am separated – will definitely look at this to see if I have any questions about the way I should change it. Really cool that there is such an easy option.
MapleMouseMama says
Having worked in the field myself Kerrie, I agree one hundred percent. Major life changes need to be addressed as soon as you can. This will help for sure.

Is there a similar service in teh US? I have put off having a will drawn because of the expense.
MapleMouseMama says
Oh I am sure there is Annalisa. It would just be a matter of searching for one. Good luck!
Heather Howard says
My parents bought a will kit from Staples and they have been advised that the courts are not recognizing them as being legal wills….so it makes me wonder about this service…
Judy Cowan says
We finally got around to doing ours a couple years ago but we went through a lawyer. For the money it cost, it is piece of mind that it is looked after.
Haley says
Hey, Heather. I too was a little wary of using an online Will site, but you know what? It was pretty easy to use. It’s also not a Will kit and comes with a signing instruction letter for you to follow. I’ve used it, and it worked for me. Maybe just try it out and see if it’s right for you? You can always register for free.
MapleMouseMama says
Thanks for the tip Haley, I appreciate it. 🙂
