Characters In Colour: Olaf from Frozen

February 24, 2014 By: MapleMouseMama44 Comments

Characters in Colour sign, Disney CharactersHaving just had a pretty fantastic Frozen themed birthday party for my kiddos this past weekend ( blog post to come ) I thought I would share Olaf with you for my next installment of Characters in Colour!  Olaf is the loveable, scene stealing snowman we are introduced to in one of the opening clips of Frozen.  It is not until Olaf is given his voice a little later on that you will truly fall in love with him, but the stage is set when our heroine Princess Anna sings “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?” to her sister Elsa.

Disney-Frozen MapleMouseMamaI discovered that in the early planning stages of Frozen the creators wanted to make Olaf a lead guard in an army of hostile snowmen that protect the castle for the Queen. I am glad they didn’t go that route.  It is impossible to equate the Olaf we know and love with the only other snowman in the movie and that is Marshmallow.  Queen Elsa creates Marshmallow to scare off unwelcome visitors and he does a pretty good job of it. He is more of a snow monster. Olaf is anything but..

The great thing about Olaf is that he can endear himself to both children and adults alike. He is not shaped like a typical snowman with just three round balls of snow in varying sizes, but rather Olaf is pieced together just as a child might do when making their very first wintery friend.  My kids love Olaf’s little feet which literally look like mini snowballs and his carrot nose, which is not shaped just “like a little baby unicorn.” 🙂 His big eyes and buck tooth smile will melt you, I swear.  Combine this adorably quirky look with his naivety and genuine love for his friends and you will love Olaf too.

Frozen, Olaf, MapleMouseMamaOne thing Disney lovers enjoy is quoting their favorite lines from a Disney flick and Frozen gives Olaf a ton of them.  My two favorites are “I like warm hugs” and “Some people are worth melting for” ( insert sigh here…). How can you not love a snowman that will melt for you? 🙂 My daughter gets a kick out of sharing the line Olaf says when he walks into a sharp icicle and that is “Oh look, I’ve been impaled.”  The actor who voices Olaf, Josh Gad, does a wonderful job of delivering these lines, making them humorous and memorable.

Perhaps the most note worthy scene for Olaf is when he sings about his love for summer.  Yup, a heat lovin’ snowman longs for sandy beaches and hot tubs.  Olaf gets to serenade his captive audience with “In Summer” and it is a performance you do not want to miss.  I can’t tell you how many times my son has watched the video.  It is definitely a catchy tune. This song shows us that while Olaf may be a bit unaware of the world, and seasons at large, he is doesn’t lack ambition. There is more to Olaf then just snow.

Frozen, Olaf, MapleMouseMamaAlthough the movie Frozen is mainly about the love and loyalty of our two heroines Anna and Elsa, it would not have the punch without this sassy snowman.  Olaf is the manifestation of their childhood bond, the bond of sisterhood and of friends.  I guarantee you will want to give Olaf a very big, warm hug once you have watched Frozen. 🙂

So, have you seen Frozen, or have I spoiled it for you?  Did you enjoy the movie?

FT&PD

Suz

I am sad to report that I have yet to see Frozen – even after all the photos and renditions of “Let it Go”. Ha! But I LOVE your post featuring Olaf’s character – I always wondered about that cute little snowman! He looks like he would be endearing, and I’m glad they didn’t go that route either (of lead guard of the hostile snowmen protecting the castle). Now you make me want to run and see the movie with the little one! Will it work with a 2 year old? Or is she too young to enjoy it?

Debbie, you will LOVE Frozen, guaranteed! It is hard to say with a 2 year old. Has she been in a theatre before? I think she will love aspects of the movie, but it depends on how long she will relax for. Maybe try her out with some YouTube videos first. They have “In Summer” which is our favorite part. Have fun if you go! Or try to see a show during one of those family shows during the day. :-0

I’ll be honest, we saw the trailers for Frozen and they were all about Olaf, so when we took our boys to see the movie we were expecting a movie about a snowman. lol we were a little disappointed it was another princess movie. Olaf was great, the whole movie could have been about him and we would have been happy.

I took my girls to see it. They loved it. My youngest can’t stop singing songs from it. A few weeks ago when we had the big snow storm, my girls made Olaf in the front yard. They are huge fans of Frozen. It was a great movie.

I just had a date with hubby about a week ago and we went to see frozen (I’m really surprised it was still in the theatre here). he wanted to go see the lego movie but I insisted the lego movie should be seen with the kids. anyway I loved frozen and I am definitely going to buy it when it comes out. I thought it was going to be very girly (and it was a bit) but I still think there is enough danger and adventure that my boys will like it.

I think they will love the daydream/song about olaf going to warm places.
