For the next two weeks, from October 1st to October 15th I have one goal and that is to keep “good food from going bad.” Sounds fairly easy right? I mean you go grocery shopping, buy what you need, stock your fridge and pantry and spend the week having healthy, tasty meals with your family. (Notice I didn’t say preparing healthy, tasty meals; that would be the hubby’s job 🙂 ) So exactly how is it a challenge to keep “good food from going bad“? Why don’t you take the #GLADFreshFoodChallenge with me and find out!
For the next two weeks our family is going to put our best efforts forward and NOT THROW OUT ANY FOOD AT ALL. I have to capitalize that so it sinks in because this really is a daunting challenge for the MapleMouseMama household. All I can say is thank the heavens for our green bin. It helps to alleviate some of the guilt I feel when we fill it up each week knowing that the contents will be recycled in some fashion, but it does nothing for our budget when we waste food like that.
Over the next two weeks I am going to post some of the challenges we have on Facebook when trying to keep “good food from going bad.” I will be sharing some interesting facts and ideas on how to protect your food with GLAD and save money at the same time! Feel free to share your ideas and challenges as well so we can all learn from one another. To whet your whistle here is a surprising statistic:
On average 13% of all food is thrown out which is about $725 worth of groceries! That works out to almost two months worth of food for the average family!!
So, are you ready to take the GLAD Fresh Food Challenge and help keep “good food from going bad?” Visit GLAD.ca for tips and tricks to help you on your journey and don’t forget to share with us! Good luck!!

I hate throwing food away when the kids went back to school I said to myself thats it no more wasting.now I keep 2 large Glad container in the freezer over my fridge, one for fruit used for smoothies and the other for veggies or any leftovers good for soup.I have found that for the month of Sept no food has been wasted & we have made a few awesome pots of soup.
MapleMouseMama says
Wow that is impressive Kathy, what a great idea! That is definitely worth sharing!
kathy downey says
I was more than surprised last winter at how many pots of soups we enjoyed from the leftover container….just try it this winter and i promise you wont believe how wasteful we humans are.
Flojean says
Well, I guess we are no different than most people and we waste too much food. Being on a fixed income to boot…we will pick up some “Glad” products and give it a try. I really like Kathy’s idea (see above), so we’ll give it a try along with some of the plastic bags. Thanks for the info, Suzanne.
MapleMouseMama says
I agree, Kathy has the right idea!
Victoria Ess says
I look forward to your posts! Freezer bags are so handy, but I try to avoid using plastic as much as possible.
MapleMouseMama says
Thank you Victoria 🙂 And I think as long as you are not wasting food then how you store it doesn’t matter too much..
Monica says
I hate wasting food and try very hard to use everything we purchase. Looking forward to your posts and getting some tips and ideas!
MapleMouseMama says
That’s great Monica!

I would love to take the Glad Fresh Food Challenge. We waste way too much in our house. Thankfully we have 11 rabbits that eat every fruit and veggie that would be going bad.
MapleMouseMama says
Oh wow, that is pretty awesome! Good luck!
Tammy (@inRdream) says
I have tried those no name brands but their is something about the technology in a GLAD bag it just works better!
MapleMouseMama says
I agree Tammy. The no names don’t cut it anymore..

I hate wasting food as well, we try to minimize the plate sizes and eat left overs when there are some etc. Sometimes the kids eyes are bigger than their stomachs! 🙂 What a great way to really see the value in the food you buy, how much you really spend on “extras” and also how much food is wasted. Looking forward to your journey!
MapleMouseMama says
It really is eye opening! We are doing better with the leftovers. I really like the idea of using smaller plates because it means less waste and not stuffing yourself until you burst, lol
LaQuita says
We’re taking the challenge as well. I hate wasting food, but admit that it some times happens. Sometimes I plan on making a meal with the fresh veggies I get and then get side tracked and don’t use them and they get thrown out. But I started taking the challenge this week and loving it!
MapleMouseMama says
that is us as well LaQuita, but this challenge is helping to open my eyes! Good luck with yours!
Gingermommy (@Gingermommy) says
It is a bit ridiculous how much food my family wastes. I am happy to accept the challenge
MapleMouseMama says
Us too Kim, but we are making a difference already!
Eldon says
We do not like to waste food too and looking forward to the challenges!
MapleMouseMama says
Awesome!

I can empathise! I too have repeatedly felt the guilt on throwing out the unused food. I think it’s a very good initiative .. Looking forward to your posts

Thank you!

I use lots of GLAD products too. Especially when I need to organise stuff for travelling.
It is also useful to carry a couple in my carry on luggage to keep small food items like breads and biscuits from the food tray which I can’t eat at that moment for later when I am hungry during transit.
Cheers~

Seems like a lot of work (LoL), but I think I can handle it. I’ll be dding this to my list.
MapleMouseMama says
LOL, it is a lot of work John, but the outcome should be worth it..
Tiffany Yong W.T. (tiffanyyongwt) says
Over in Singapore, I think I rarely have the problem of throwing unused food away as we always buy in small portions just enough for 1-2 days. The grocery stores are within reach and we like to keep food fresh too!
MapleMouseMama says
That makes sense Tiffany and I wish the stores were that accessible here. But with my busy schedule I could never fit it so many trips to the store each week. Wish me luck with the challenge!
Rebecca Wong says
This is good! It’s really crucial to educate kids not to waste food. =)
MapleMouseMama says
Yes, it certainly is Rebecca..
3xhcch says
Kids should serve themselves and they should finish what they get. It is really so wasteful when there is excess food that goes to the trash. In our country, there are some very poor people who eat these leftovers, which is very sad indeed, but the food does not completely go to waste. – Fred
MapleMouseMama says
I think if my kids were allowed to serve themselves they would eat nothing but carbs; no veggies and no fruit. At least this way we are showing how not to waste food..
Vanessa says
I hate throwing food away. In my opinion this is such a waste and it is just not fair to do so when there are so many people starving all over the world. Count me in for the challenge!
MapleMouseMama says
Yes! We are happy to have you Vanessa 🙂
Ling Tan says
Very much looking forward to reading your journey. I try to buy just enough can week, so we can eat fresh and not waste, but it is true it’s soooo hard not to waste.
MapleMouseMama says
Thank you Ling!
Franc Ramon says
Glad really has the packaging items that can make food last longer. This would be much more economical as you get to maximize good food.
MapleMouseMama says
Yes, very true Franc..
Jason Panuelos says
GLAD has become a household staple and it’s really not surprising since it always delivers in terms of quality and function. My family’s been using Glad for as long as I can remember! 🙂
MapleMouseMama says
That is excellent Jason!
Joanna Sormunen says
This is an awesome challenge! So much good food is thrown away when so many people go hungry around the world.
Tim says
I grew up in a family that tries to never waste food. It was a pattern of saving left-overs that has come down through the generations.
agarwalsamajbhilwara says
I have a better phrase for this task, let me know if like it “Good Food for Good Bad (good sleep)”
Justin Vawter says
this would really be awesome!! I am looking forward for your results. And perhaps, we should take in the challenge too in our household. 🙂
silaytambayan.com says
It is a good challenge though. What my mom does every time there is a left food, is that she cook it. We must never waste food as it is blessings from God.
MapleMouseMama says
Very true!

I’m a big fan of storage bags as they keep the contents air tight, and take up less space in the fridge.
