Little Black Dog: Living with Depression
Today I learned
About a little black dog
It’s living with me
Hiding in the fog
It’s fur is matted
Dirty ears torn
Hidden from view
Since the day it was born
This wolf-like creature
So desperate to get out
Escaping from it’s jail
Begging for help
It walks a tightrope
Swaying to and fro
Holding on for dear life
Not willing to let go
The net is there
Just waiting to catch
Being offered to us
Oh please accept
It’s hard to take
The hand that is offered
Believe there’s a chance
Really trust that I matter
Now the tightrope has become
A lifeline for me
Searching for guidance
For an eternity
A gentle mist comes
Falling through the years
Will it wash away
All the unshed tears?
But the little black dog
Shrinks back from the rain
Enveloped in darkness
Embraced once again
Hope is still there
Just waiting for release
Don’t ever give up
Someday there will be peace

What a beautiful poem, I just don’t understand why there’s a stigma attached to depression. Everyone knows someone who suffers from some kind of mental problem.

I can totally relate to this. I suffered from severe post partum depression after the birth of three of my five children, and no one wanted children more than I did. It is not a shameful thing any more than a broken leg.Thank you for sharing. We should be kind to everyone, not only because our dear Lord tells us to, but because we do not know the burdens someone else is carrying.
