Growing up my parents would purchase Cinnamon Raisin Bread on grocery shop day as a special treat. We all loved to toast it, spread on the butter and just enjoy. Usually with a cup of tea. But, we never did try making our own version and that small, purple bag would be empty in no time. So I thought it was high time we shared a delicious Cinnamon Raisin Bread recipe and gave it a whirl. This particular one came from Kathy’s kitchen.
Cinnamon Raisin Bread
Ingredients and Directions (follow the steps):
Step One
- 1 & a 1/2 cups of boiling water
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 teaspoons of salt
Combine the above ingredients in a large bowl and let it cool.
Step Two
- 1 & a 1/2 cups of lukewarm water (not too warm, you’ll kill the yeast)
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of fast rising yeast
Dissolve the water and sugar in a small bowl. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit.
Step Three
- 2 eggs, well beaten
- 6-7 cups of unbleached white flour
1) Mix the beaten eggs into the first mixture from Step One, once it has cooled to room temperature.
2) Next add 1 cup of flour to this mixture and stir well.
3) Now add the yeast mixture from Step Two to the bowl and stir to combine.
4) Gradually add the remaining flour, one cup at a time, stirring until the dough is too hard to combine in the bowl. Then prepare a hard surface, like a cutting board or counter top, by spreading a good layer of flour on it. Keep the flour handy to make sure your hard surface does not become stick. Dump the dough on the surface and knead by hand until your dough is smooth and pliable, for about ten minutes.
5) Put your dough into a well greased bowl, cover it with a clean dish cloth and then place it in a warm area to rise.
6) Allow your dough to rise until it has doubled in size and than push it down. It will take approximately 35-40 minutes to rise. Once you have you pushed the dough back down into the bowl, repeat the process once.
7) Preheat your oven to 350 F and grease the pan.
Step Four
- 2 tablespoons of butter, melted
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1/3 cup of raisins
1) Roll out two cups of dough almost the shape of a pizza. It should be about an 1 & 1/2 inches thick.
2) Spread the melted butter over the dough, thinly, but making sure to reach the edges. Next, sprinkle the brown sugar, then the cinnamon and then the raisins..
3) Roll up the dough length-wise to make a loaf or even a log shape (depending on how long your dough is.) Place the rolled up dough in your greased pan, cover it with the dish towel and let it rise until it has doubled.
4) When it is ready, place in the oven at 350 F and bake until it is golden brown (approximately 15 to 20 minutes.) Remove from the oven once it is done, slice and serve! Enjoy!

Sounds like a yummy snack/treat.
I haven’t made bread of any kind in ages, well tea breads and tea biscuits excluded. I did wonder, however if one could use whole wheat flour here or even half and half? It seems to me that cinnamon/raisin bread is darker but that could just be the cinnamon that makes it appear darker. Thanks for sharing this, Suzanne. Definitely one to bring me back to making bread!
I love anything cinnamon, but I’d have to leave out the raisins bcz I do not like them!
